Reading thru the http://www.thefastlaneforum.com/gene...rrari-20k.html thread, I decided to see what all the fuss was about. I went to Flippa and spent a little time seeing what they had going on.

I found an auction that looked intriguing. See https://flippa.com/2748967-450-per-m...no-reserve-emd to see the auction. The domain name has good keywords, it does indeed rank on the first page of Google for "Psychologist Responsibilities and Salaries", and the Infolinks income reports appear legit. There were a lot of comments, a lot of bids, and it looked to be a good buy.

The evidence pointed to $450/mo income, +/-, so a buy it now price of $900 seemed like a very good deal. I realized there was every chance the income could drop off, but if it held its own for 2 months anything else it made was gravy. It was only $900, so I pulled the trigger.

It has been exasperating dealing with this seller. He had no idea how to transfer either the domain or the files. That was fine, 'cause neither did I. I learned quite a bit about transferring both.

I've now had the site up and running for about a week, and I can tell you I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. I've made $0.21 since the site has been up, and I think that's because I clicked on some of the infolinks ads from my iPad to make sure it was working.

I now find myself with a low quality Wordpress site with a decent domain name. It does rank #1 for a specific search term, but I don't know how important that is. The content is damn near worthless - I've been cleaning up and using the SEO widget to optimize the copy off and on over the past week. I've fixed broken links. I'm basically cleaning up what I've already got to get it in decent shape, then will look in to adding some quality content.

I realized I was chasing money, not a need, but I was fine with that. The idea was to use this money to finance my true fastlane venture. If it doesn't work out, I'm only out a few hundred bucks.

What I've learned - TRUST BUT VERIFY. The seller claimed to not have Analytics installed so couldn't provide information about his sources of traffic. That should have been a big red flag. Also, I should have done more due diligence investigating the seller. Turns out he doesn't have a good reputation, and my experience bears this out.

Some of you are Wordpress and SEO wizards. I would really appreciate some advice on how I can salvage something other than lessons. Please look at psychologydegree.info and let me know what you think I should do with it.

    I appreciate your help.

Install some analytics software, google analytics is pretty easy to install.
Another good one is piwik, but you'll need to be able to log into the server, and manually upload files through FTP, and a MySQL database.

What exactly do you want to do with the domain? It's quite hard to make a profit just out of ads. Why don't you try to build a community and try to sell psychology related stuff in there? Maybe a dropshipping business may be a good idea.

Create an appealing landing page, if you don't know how to design, go to:
Premium WordPress Themes, Web Templates, Mobile Themes | ThemeForest
You can find nice landing pages there

Afterwards, you might create an account on
Email Marketing and Email List Manager | MailChimp

    and start a mailing lists.

Then do some research on what psychology students and prospective students needs the most, you can go to amazon and sign up for the affiliate program, browse some psychology books and send the link shown in your affiliate control panel to the mailing list. Doing it that way, you will earn a percentage of the sale, not much, but it's better than two cents.

Research Psychology journals and see which one of them offer some kind of affiliate program, so you can encourage your subscribers to buy a membership in a journal, and you'll get a percentage of that sale.

How deep are you into psychology? A blog seems to be a good idea, as long as you don't repeat your content, you have a good domain name, try to call universities and see if they offer some kind of partnership, if you get people to enroll in their programs, you may be able to get another percentage out of that.

I installed Google Analytics, so that's done.

I don't know what to do with the domain. Dropshipping might be an interesting avenue - hadn't considered that. Maybe psychology degree textbooks!

Solid advice, thanks. Did you look at the site? The first page is the latest post, typical wordpress blog stuff. You're saying I should have a static landing page instead?

I've already got an Amazon affiliate account, so I could easily incorporate that in.

Good suggestion about psychology journal affiliate opportunities.

I'm not even remotely involved in psychology. I'd need to farm that out.

I'm sure that ignoring some very basic precautions of pre purchase dilligence will teach you some valuable lessons and you won't make that mistake again! Similar things have happened to me before so I can understand making this mistake once.

As well as the problems you identified already you should be extremely wary on flippa of the yellow warning triangle sign at the top of the listing that indicates it has been listed before. In this case it was listed 3 times. NOT A GOOD SIGN.

I'll see if there is anything I can do to help but it is a toughie!

Infact : You might want to try planting those magic beans instead

What about selling psychology textbooks (or if you don't want to go crazy, just add some widgets to textbooks through Amazon's affiliate program, for example)?

I don't think the idea of the site is terrible - I didn't really read the articles on the home page in much detail, but the titles were interesting to me. You could probably make this into something, if you really want to.

You could use it as an affiliate site or move your own products by using an existing affiliate network like CJ or Clickbank.

The site has potential. It's got keywords and it may make you a bit of passive income (nothing major though).

Good luck! Turn some shit into sugar!

    Hi

I haven't got any suggestions about what to do with the site, but I suggest you change the front page posts fairly quickly - at a quick glance the first one appears to be a word for word copy of this & you will probably be violating copyright laws.

Just trying to save you any additional grief...

Well you can Move the blog To a subdirectory, and use the domain to get subscribers, the blog will
Help You to keep the position on the SERPs and build a community, however if you're not really into psychology then it would be quite
Hard for you to keep up with the articles.

Sumbitch! I was pleased with that one too because it was a quality post.

    Thanks for pointing it out.

My niece recently graduated with a degree in psychology, so I plan to have her write an article or two. Maybe a new one every month would keep the site fresh enough. I like the idea of changing it up with a landing page then links to articles beneath that.

What do you think of changing the template? This looks kind of dated.

It seems like every single post is a copy. The person who sold it must make a good living being dishonest.

How are you guys finding these out? Do you just google part of the post and see if it shows up somewhere else? How would I know who copied who? I fully suspect my posts are plagiarized, but how do I know?

I been thinking more about this. I've got an amazon affiliate account, so that would be easy to do. I'm also thinking about promoting other used textbook sellers in exchange for affiliate income and links back to my site.

I just highlight a section of the text then right click on it and select google search.

I guess you could look at the credebility of the person who wrote the article in the first place. Look for the author on the websites where your text is based.

Situations like this really bug me. These sellers are just throwing together a few PLR articles onto a crappy wordpress template and "fudging" the income numbers.

Sadly, Amail, you have learned a very valuable lesson in site buying. Due diligence and verification will be your allies from now on i'm sure.

Looking on the bright side and taking the recommendations of other posters, there are may options available to you in terms of making something out of your purchase. You may not get the ROI you are looking for, at least not in the short term. However, you possess a ranked keyword and a canvas ready for development.

There are a number of monetization strategies surrounding this niche.

    -Books
    -Affiliate offers
    -Ads
    -services

    Just to name a few.

Now just focus on providing value to your readers/visitors. Think from their perspective and feed the NEED.

In doing so you will be able to make the best out of a bad situation.

I kind of liked the template... it seems somewhat academic. Maybe spruce it up a little, but I don't think you need to change it too much.
