I understand many use joomla for their website design. How exactly does joomla work? Is it a template wizard or does it automatically create a website of any detail (basic to advanced) when the user enters parameters into a certain field? Thanks.

Think of Joomla sort of as a smarter more deeply customizable Wordpress (if you know how to write code). A couple of years ago, Joomla was the system to use to create a custom membership site, or even small e-commerce. Wordpress has closed the gap significantly. As with anything on the Internet there are people that think it is the be all content management system.

We are used to WP when it comes to GUI and hacking, my guys tried Joomla but found it's system logically puzzling and it's GUI antiquated to say the least.
Stick with whatever you find faster to finish.

Joomla's interface is a bit harder than WordPress but the advantage it has is that you can get many features or modules compared to WordPress. If u r designing a website that u r going to have to update frequently and u r going to spend a lot of time on it, then u better try Joomla.
I have a site that runs off of Joomla still, i find it to be a nightmare to use. It's fairly complex, to me anyway, to work anything into the code and database. I would rather build a site off a code library/css framework if i can find a purpose built software(like e-commerce or leadgen) or utilize wordpress.

I've played with Joomla and WordPress a bit. I'm no web wonder, but I dicked around with them both making different websites.
Joomla is a weird beast to me. It's not intuitive at all at first. You get the hang of it, but it's completely different from WordPress.
I ended up going back to WordPress because people tell me it's a lot more SEO friendly than Joomla.
