Thread: What the Founder’s Email Address Says About Your Startup

I like the simple one the best but mine is first initial last name. I might switch to just first and last initials. Make it easy as possible to contact me.

I have a few customers that have wild email addresses that I can not even pronounce so I have to type each letter individually, some also have dashes and dots and underscores and .nets instead of .coms. Screw all that mess.

Wow, that was really interesting to see the nuances of each email option. Like this one:

john-smith114@gmail.com <– The founders can’t even figure out how to buy their own domain name.


I'm reminded of the Fastlane advice to look like a big company, but act like a small company. The gmail address definitely makes John Smith look smalltime and yes, domain-challenged.

What message might your email address be sending?

That's pretty interesting. Something I never thought of.

I have to disagree on the gmail one.

I used to believe that myself a few years ago.\ That was until numerous suppliers from China said they were not getting my emails.

And explained they use and prefer gmail as their govt blocks so many email/websites.

That's an interesting distinction. I wonder if someone who has international contacts might benefit from two email addresses -- one for the domestic market (to ensure you have the right image), and another for overseas (to make sure your email isn't filtered out.)

LOL, I think I have about 8 active right now. They are each for a different purpose. They forward either to my yahoo or my gmail email accounts.

I have 3 here. Personal, Corporate and Customer relations. I use corporate to contact and converse with strategic partners although it will replace my current customer ralations email as I grow out of my current region.

I use either gmail or contact@domain.com

Used to use CEO@domain.com but not really useful unless that's your own job which for most you do a lot of different things.

Cannot really compete with gmail, although I have about 6 other emails running on Zimba and Thunderbird

Just use Google Apps. Its Gmail with your own domain. You get the best of both worlds. Easily recognized and "sent via Gmail".
