I enjoyed playing some card games as a kid, but it stopped there. Today, I can play "Go Fish", "War", and "Rumy" ..Time to take a bolder step into a game with more strategy and risk management.
I ended up catching a poker game tournament on tv the other night. It looked very interesting, but I know absolutely nothing about it (except what a pair of cards are). I kept hearing things about the blind, the river card, etc. I don't want to commit any type of real money at some of these sites which would be reckless. I am looking for a site that can teach me to play while I get the opportunity to play with "fake"/"paper money" to learn the concepts and dynamics of the game. Is there such a place? (& without some monthly membership fee)?
Also, are there others on this forum who do play the game on occassion? I am looking to play this casually as putting time & energy into endeavors is first priority. Is there a "Fastlane" poker group here established that could take me under your wings to learn the game?
Thank you!

Even experienced players lose a lot of money. I saw an episode of an MTV show called, World of Jenks where he spent some time with a professional poker player who at one point one the world poker tournament; he received over 2 million from that tournament but had lost it all within a couple of years through gambling. Gambling tends to cause people to make stupid decisions because of their ego; if you're down and losing money you will keep betting more to try to reclaim your reputation and end up broke. It's much better in my opinion spending time learning how to start a real business like real estate rather than trying to learn how to play poker.
I would check out snowbanks threads http://www.thefastlaneforum.com/sear...searchid=22610

Its kind of hard to learn on ft and ps since they mess around going all in on any 2 cards. I would play with some friends for low limits.

That happens because they win a decent score but have bad bankroll management. I would invest most of what you win into other ventures too. It depends on the situation, its not just gambling, it could be if your flipping a coin against someone in 1 hand like if its a coin toss situation and you have your whole bankroll on the line against a pro with a bigger bankroll. Its luck and skill and a means to a end imo.
Sounds like you need a very basic book on poker. You were watching Texas Holdem Poker.
There used to be a few of us who would get online and play a private table together but that was a few years ago.

Thanks guys. My interest in learning to play is soley for the aspect of the strategy and the mindset of "play the cards dealt to you in life" - merely casual activity. I don't have much of a desire to enter in with real money as a venture or attempt to earn money or lose it.
I have higher levels of success by making money in the stock market than I could ever imagine at a gaming table.
I ended up signing up at PokerStars since the customer support was able to return m y email the quickest regarding some questions I had.

Maybe I'm just taking your words too literally? Because you know, Uno comes to mind as a game where playing the cards you're dealt in life is what's important, not having a better hand. (And yes, I employ bluffing and reading skills in Uno!)... Where poker is more about risk assessment and interpersonal skills.
Now, given the cut-throat negotiation tactics I've heard of, playing poker- especially face to face, might help you there. (Example: someone has you fly in to negotiate and asks when your plane leaves. They deliberately get you distracted until the last day, insisting on how there's plenty of time, so when the last day comes you have no time to argue against the contract, and you are far more apt to sign it before you leave. That story comes from Steve Pavlina, back when the dexterity boards still existed.)
Automation is important. This is an automated disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, all advice is opinion, and I will not be held accountable for other peoples stupidity.
