    Default Happy Hurricane Season!

Anyone else living on the coast right now? Erin is supposed to land a direct hit on us tonight and tomorrow morning. It's just a tropical storm fortunately, but we've got a plane to catch 100 miles away tomorrow morning and don't want the roads to be flooded out. Also, Dean is forecast to become a strong hurricane and is most likely coming toward us in a week or so. We're stocked up on supplies and I have plywood on its way to cover up our big window (9x6 feet) and might have to go take a visit inland if it does continue to track this way. Anyone been through a hurricane before? I'd be excited to ride out a category 1 or 2, but 3-5 could damage this building, and I wouldn't want to be here if that happened :-P Maybe it will be my first chance to use our battery-less radio and flashlight

I have been through five hurricanes. The worst one was Andrew when I lived in Miami. I also lost the roof of my business in a hurricane three years ago. I had to gut the whole building and replace all the furniture, computers, phone systems, etc. That was not fun at all.

Thankfully I don't have to make any preparations for hurricanes anymore, as I have very thick hurricane windows in my house and a stand-by generator.

At what category do you think one should run inland instead of hunkering down in an old apartment?

Depends on the quality of construction and how far away you are from the water. Either way, get the heck out of town for a cat 4 and 5.

Construction is fair...only 2 blocks from the Nueces Bay, about 5 miles from the Gulf. Fortunately I'm up about 30 feet in elevation, and we have the Padre Islands that block most of the storm surge. Guess we'll have to wait and see what Dean will do before making any "vacation" plans. Thanks for the responses =)

The higher up you are, the stronger the winds are. I would suggest you only stay for a cat 1 and 2.

JesseO, I was thinking about your situation with these news. I hope everything is well over there, but just in case a nice "vacation" is not such a bad idea.

Well, Tropical Storm Erin only hit us for about an hour, then moved north. Ground was dry by morning, but I was hydroplaning all the way to San Antonio this morning, even though were were only going 45 mph or so....LOTS of rain! I'm just glad I made it home in one piece now :-P

It looks like Jamaica will be hit really hard.

Book a hotel room in San Antonio now. If the hurricane veers away, you can cancel it.

Yeah Jesse I would listen to Steve-O go ahead and book a room and if it is a cat 4 or above head out. I have been through a couple of hurricanes and typhoons and it can be a little scary if it is big.

On Saturday I booked a hotel in Austin for Tuesday-Sunday...I will cancel it tomorrow or early Tuesday as allowed if it's still going to hit Mexico. I'd rather it be them than me, but let's all pray for as little loss of life as possible wherever Dean hits. Right now Jamaica is taking quite a hit...Grand Cayman is deemed to be next, then Mexico.......
