I'm no different..

“Hey Everybody!”

“Hey Dr. Nick!”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What's up folks? I really feel like it’s been a while since I provided some long-lasting, sustainable value around here, mostly because I’ve been focusing on my current endeavor. And in thinking to myself, “Self: what kind of value could you provide to the community?,” it occurred to me that I’ve got lots of life experience that’s likely to be of use to some folks here, so why not share?
Disclaimer: I’m not a guru. I’m not selling anything. I am not perfect or infallible. I have been wrong. I have FAILED, OVER and OVER.
More disclaimers: I am, however, widely read, successful in my field(s) outside of business, have F**D up enough to know what NOT to do, and I really, truly believe that GREATNESS lies within EACH & EVERY ONE OF US. Yes! It does! We just have to believe, in ourselves and each other! Also, any medical thoughts posted here are just that, thoughts. They're not medical opinions or advice, so don't take it that way.
Anyway, pull up a chair. Stay awhile. I’m here to drop some knowledge bombs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So I'll start off, just so no one thinks that I'm Mister Hot Stuff. ;)

MISTAKES THAT I’VE MADE IN LIFE (not at all comprehensive)

  • Gave up a full ride scholarship to Harvey Mudd in order to ‘Find Myself”

  • Graduated High School believing that I wasn’t smart enough, or fit enough to be anything in life.

  • Listened to negative people who said, “You’ll never be a scientist.” -Wrong.

  • Listened to negative people who said, “You’ll never be a doctor.” -Wrong.

  • Believing that I would never be a GREAT ER doctor (self doubt) -Wrong.

  • Believing that Women were From Another Planet, and thus unknowable. - TOTALLY WRONG

  • Believing that I could never run a sub 6 min mile - WRONG
  • Believing that women were in any way inferior to men. - TOTALLY WRONG
  • Believed that I had to have a miserable JOB after residency that crushed my soul, because “Doctor, that’s just the way that it is. You’ll never find anything better.” - TOTALLY WRONG.
  • Believing that I could never conquer the Marine Corps Obstacle Course - TOTALLY WRONG

    • ocrse1.jpg
SUCCESSES THAT I’VE HAD (not at all comprehensive)
  • Married a beautiful lady who’s the mother of my three children, and who’s totally smarter and tougher than I am.

  • Served 5+ years in the Marine Corps.

  • Successfully completed a Master of Science in Developmental Genetics, and have had papers published, and learned how to be a really solid scientist. This despite thinking to myself, “Are you crazy? You? A geneticist? Get out!”

  • Made it into medical school despite being rejected THREE times

  • Placed into a top tier residency after med school despite average grades. Why? Because I worked my a$$ off to be a great med student by providing TONS OF VALUE to any program that I worked with.

  • Became a kickass Emergency Physician

  • Left the crap job after residency for the best job in any place, that I’ve ever had (thanks to MJ and the book for this inspiration)

  • Have had one successful (software) business experience (with a profitable exit!),

  • Helped another family member’s business grow and succeed.

  • Am having fun doing something that is WAY out of my comfort zone or previous life experience. Hell, it may even become profitable. ;)

Why do I share all of this? Because in EACH CASE where I was successful, I succeeded by overcoming the PERCEIVED LIMITS. Limits imposed by others or by myself. And dudes...I grew up so very poor/lower middle class that it’s hysterical. I HATE it when I hear others (or myself) whine about some goal being ‘too difficult.’

Hell, our very own @Vigilante kicked my a$$ about three weeks ago. It was very, very painful to receive...but I wouldn’t take that a$$ kicking back if you paid me $100,000 right now.

So anyway….

.

.

.

LIMITS and SUCCESS

Look here, mate: None of us are perfect and ALL of us have unspoken fears, desires, and self-imposed limitations. Some of those fears and limitations are consciously imposed, while others are more subtle. A good friend of mine and a fellow entrepreneur pointed me to the latest Ryan Moran (Freedom Fastlane) podcast, where he asks, "Are YOU Thinking Big Enough?" today.

Whoops! I thought that I had been Thinking Big Enough, but it turns out that I hadn't been. Listening to that podcast this morning was a huge wake up call. I've been thinking too small. Smallish goals, not the massive INSANE success that I REALLY wanted. I've been struggling with doubt, fear, and complacency.

Which got me to thinking...what are EACH of us doing, EVERY DAY to push ourselves beyond our limits?

* Who are your friends? Who are the Five People that you spend most every day with?

* What kind of information do you allow into your life?
  • Nightly news? Internet news sites? The Atlantic/Slate/Fox News/Etc?

  • Reddit?

  • Playing video games?

  • How about kick a$$ business or mindset books?

  • Are you watching videos or researching your competitors?

  • Are you reading the MASSIVELY VALUABLE Gold Threads? No? Go to https://www.thefastlaneforum.com/community/ and click on “GOLD Threads” and prepare to have your mind blown.

* What do you say about yourself to others?

THE WORDS THAT YOU USE TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF WILL END UP DEFINING YOU.

It’s true: I recently had a complete mindset change in this area.

For a long time, even after coming onto this forum, even after starting and exiting from a software business, and EVEN AFTER STARTING my latest venture, when someone asked what I did for a living, I said “I’m a physician.”

Think about that. When I’m not working I told everyone and even myself (subconsciously) that I was a physician, which meant that entrepreneurship wasn’t truly integral to my identity. Yet after the a$$ chewing noted above, I switched to telling everyone, “I’m an entrepreneur.” Less sexy, but more fundamentally reflective of who I am. And the difference in my productivity has been massive.

So, I ask you: What do you tell yourself? What face do you present to the world?

* Last thing: Get yourself a Mastermind.

Small group, no more than 3-5 to start. Stock it with people who aren’t afraid to call you on your weaknesses, but who also carry a heart filled with service. Service to you, to others and to their customers. It’d be nice if they were more successful than you, but at this point it’s more important to have folks who can push you, provide lots of value, and for whom you can do the same.

Alright, enough for now. More to come. Hope that it’s helpful to some, and if I come off as a chode, please lemme know.

Cheers!

PS: I thought of a couple of other things:

* Massive CHANGE requires a MASSIVE LEVER.

Do you think Cyrus the Great, Alexander the Great, Caesar, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk ever went at anything in a half-hearted manner? F*** No. So why are you? Why am I? Food for thought.

I LEARNED A TON (yes, the doc learned something). @csalvato

* You can absolutely learn from everyone.

Whether it's a positive or negative lesson, everyone has something to teach you. Every single patient encounter has either taught me about disease, patients, or very often, about my own beliefs, blind spots, and arrogance. :(

* We all die. Sooner or later.

None of us are immortal, though of course I thought so before medical school. So...what are you waiting for?

* [!] If you find that you snore a lot, sleep 8+ hours a night, but still awaken feeling exhausted and needing naps, and find it difficult to lose weight,

...you may suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It's a silent, but deadly condition with A Simple, Effective Cure! Consider getting checked out.

If you listen for it, you will hear the self defined limits by yourself and others constantly in daily conversation. We are limitless (@AndrewNC ) but hinder our abilities with our belief systems.
Yeah. So very true! What we say DOES define us.

More to come, but regarding the Sleep Apnea bit above.

I've been getting queries, and so I thought that I would post my response for everyone. Reminder that this is NOT Official Medical Advice. Please speak to your doctor. :)

1. If you have health insurance - GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR.

2. If you don't - getting evaluated can be expensive so I totally understand that cost issue.

If you have a SO, ask them if you stop breathing at night or if they're ever worried about the way that you sound at night. If there's a yes, you likely have OSA.

Low cost options: You can try an oral device that, while not as effective, can provide some relief:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1794626/

"We conclude that oral appliances, although not as effective as CPAP in reducing sleep apnea, snoring, and improving daytime function, have a definite role in the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea."
It's an interesting read and the full text is free.

Other thoughts:
    • lose weight (increased likelihood of developing if you're obese)
    • exercise regularly
    • sleep positioning (side is better than on your back)
Good luck!

Decide That YOU DON’T WANT TO BE AVERAGE

A truly human trait is the ability to turn BIG DREAMS into BIG REALITY.

Think about it: ever since the first proto-humans came down out of the trees and ventured (or were pushed) onto the savanna, Homo sapiens has made colossal things happen:

The Great pyramids of Egypt

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So then ask yourself: Were these things formed by people who let doubt rule their lives? Were the originators timid? Or BOLD? You already know the answer...

Stock%20Index%20Down.png

What's another, VERY HUMAN trait?

You guessed it. The ability to naysay:
  • “It can’t be done”
  • “You’re crazy!”
  • “That’s impossible. Nothing like that has ever been done before.”
  • “There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home."
    • Ken Olsen, founder of Digital Equipment Corporation, 1977
  • "Apple is already dead."
    • Nathan Myhrvold, former Microsoft CTO, 1997
  • “Why don’t you stop with the crazy dream and get a real job?!”
    • Your mother/father/siblings/aunts/uncles/”friends”
  • “You’re not going to make it. Be reasonable.”
    • Your mother/father/siblings/aunts/uncles/”friends”
The effects of these sayings, most meant in a loving way are DEVASTATING.

What happens to a child's dream between 5 and 18?

Talk to any 5 year old and you'll get amazing insight, fearlessness, and aspirations of greatness. Dreams of space travel, of finding lost treasures, or being an amazing ballerina or actress or artist. Dreams of of being the very best in whatever they choose to do.

It's just like that Monster.com commercial from a few years back:

Now look at your average 18 year old. They're afraid of standing out, of success (or failure). They are comfortable with being told,
  • what to do
  • what to become
  • what's an 'acceptable' life
  • where to be at any hour of the day
  • when we can travel or take a crap,
  • or be with our family.
And to what end? To become a 'productive' member of society?
----------------------------------------------------------------

Look: the only way, and I mean the ONLY F-IN WAY that you will ever achieve ANY goal of ANY TRUE WORTH (the kind of goal that causes you to straighten your back in pride) is to go at it with the mindset that THIS WILL HAPPEN. What Yoda said was absolutely spot on,

"Do or do not. There is no try."

Personal story

I've wanted to be physician ever since I can remember. I didn’t do so well in college after coming out of the Marine Corps, mostly because my pride kept me from listening to other’s advice about how to study.

As is the case at most colleges, there exists a pre-med office who purportedly exist to help students get into medical school. The reality at my alma mater was that the office was graded on the number of ‘successful’ applicants. Anyone who ‘didn’t make the grade’ or who were ‘destined to failure’ (their words!) was ruthlessly discouraged from applying.

I distinctly remember walking out of the pre-med advisor’s office in absolute shock. I had just received the (then) devastating news that they would NOT be helping me toward my dream any further. As the counselor said,

“You’re never going to be a doctor and you might as well give up. I don’t think that you have it in you to succeed in this. You’re clearly not smart enough.”

Did I roll over and show my belly? Did I curl up in a ball in a dark room and feel sorry for myself? You bet your a$$ that I did!

But then you know what I did? I figured a way around the solution. As Marcus Aurelius (and Ryan Holliday) would say, The Obstacle Became The Way.

A few years (five^) later I was accepted to an outstanding Texas medical school and I was on my way.

It was, and remains today, one of the best moments of my life.

Hj_Xo4AzS7xcfmSXF6KazIf_rL5w01Z2rRArR7kzrN8VPonoFb01yUjwHnxoFMi758fLtszOxZTBFPrgntGrD8EC9l4Bbr5L8qIEBTrQXRgOZNtTCPTWXKy-yjDr3wA3XPCMRTRw

[^] Note how there was no 'overnight' success. That the goal didn't come easily. That it took FIVE years of gut churning, exhausting SACRIFICE. That I had to GROW, LEARN, and CHANGE - became a scientist, learn how to be excellent at that, taking extra classes at night on top of everything else, and re-taking the MCAT until I achieved an outstanding "GASP! That score is AMAZING!" result.

player-pause.png

So What The F*** are you whining about?

What's your excuse TODAY for not doing that one thing that will move you forward into the FUTURE?

What's wasting your time today?

What are you waiting for? Because brother...

Tomorrow is waiting for YOU.

You're welcome. What are you going to do today to get where you want to be? :)

Making those calls I have been SCARED to make.

And think about those beliefs you mentioned.

(ha! busted, still came back to answer this one. Whoops)

Thanks again!

Awesome post.. +rep!

This was one of the keys for me early on.
I one hundred percent convinced and told myself that I was no longer a guy working at a 9-5 job (even though I still was). I made the mental mind switch and started thinking of myself as an entrepreneur - even when I was still collecting regular paychecks and my aspirations were still at the dreaming/idea stages.

- You are not a day job employee, who happens to be an aspiring entrepreneur
- You ARE an entrepreneur already, who just so happens to have a distracting day job FOR NOW

This is great!!! Thank you so much for posted it.

I have been telling myself for a few weeks now "think bigger", every time I hear someone complaining, or every time I have a doubt creep into my mind.

I have onl few questions,

1. I studied engineering and dropped out. Now I'm 26, Do nothing.sort of!! But I worked in various con jobs.
So do you think is it good idea to go for med school at this age? 26!!!

I'm definitely sure about getting into med school. So what will happen to my situation. If I applied.

I have only 2 days to apply for the prelim exam for getting into med school.
If you fire your answer soon. I will apply today itself.

Why I'm interested in being a doctor?
I will answer that later.

Please advise.

Thank you

Man, only you can answer that question.

But this job sucks if you don't have an intense desire to do it. So...don't do it. Good luck.

My first reply to this was "is this a serious question?!" or is he trolling us? I thought he was trolling us because the answer to this question is soooo simple.

Then I realized you're actually struggling with this...because I used to struggle with it.

I used to care what people would think of me. When I was about to make another decision, I had to check with others first, almost as if I was asking for permission to do the thing I knew I wanted to do.

Why do people do this?

They don't want to make the wrong decision. If we tell you to do something...then you do it...and it goes right... you made the right decision because it went right.

But if that decision went poorly and led to failure - It allows you to blame others for it. You might not like what I'm saying, but we are getting deep here.

Deep down, I know a part of you understands this.

Then I learned a few valuable things -

1. There is no wrong decision, when you follow the path that leads you to where YOU want to be. The first question to ask yourself is "Where do I want to be in life? What is an ideal day in your life like?

2. Then, ignore the thoughts in your mind, and listen to your gut. What FEELS like the right thing for you to do?

3. Successful people (in any area of life) make decisions. This puts YOU in control of the life you want to live. We all make decisions, and sometimes they go one way, sometimes they go another way. But no matter what, they lead us to a place where we'll have more decisions to make. So in the end...you know what decision YOU want to make.
