WANTS.
What people want, more often than not, they do not need.

Girls don't need a barbie. They just want 'em.

Nobody really needed those coloured rubberbands around their wrists, yet
people wanted them to show off what they like and support, and companies wanted them for cheap advertisment.

For my part, I don't need an Iphone, Crocs, whatever. I need air, food&water, and a roof.
Air is for free(now), for the other things I need money.

What all the mentioned products have in common is that they are branded.
These companies sell their customers a special feeling, a way of life, they provide some value but
also make people think their lifes will be so much better when they purchase.

Since reading TMF , I'm walking through my daily life, looking for needs.
And gosh, they are everywhere.
But what always boggled me is how you CREATE a need, an imaginary need, a want.
A need out of nothing. Nobody needs it, yet still they want it.

Any ideas?

I think those wants are in fact needs. I could see your examples fitting into the higher levels of Maslow's Hierarchy.

Otherwise known as the "Life Force 8"

There are 8 Hard Wired Human Desires, and 9 Learned Human Wants (which are always secondary).

No matter what way you slice it, the 8 Hard Wired Wants will ALWAYS be more effective as every single human on earth (even other animals in certain ways) have these desires since BIRTH.

Read "Brain Scripts" by Drew Whitman. He explains everything about this.

Well, for me, you find a need by finding a market.
Its not SO much about what a single PERSON wants, but what the market can accept.

If you want to look at fun markets there all kinds of them that already serve "wants" you can study. Just look at the impulse buy items at the supermarket, magazine stands, and novelty food vendors (snowcones?).

BUT just because your product is fun or desireable doesn't make it a needed concept, buyers do. If people want your product but don't WANT it as much as another, no one buys, and as a result that market might just not "need" you.

;)

Keep playin around though, its good to think on your feet about this stuff.

Got it.

We shouldn't just think outside the box, but create boxes for others to think in.

Whenever something shows up with high impact and little function, it becomes a myth, a legend.
Doesn't matter if it's gods, tales of heroes, or coca cola.
