I have an essay I need to write a.s.a.p. and the topic is interesting:

"Write an essay that discusses some of the effects of a specific invention that you feel are more significant than people generally recognize."

The first thing that comes to my mind is the internet and the world wide web.

Then when I wait to think of something else -- I get nothing.

Any other ideas?

I'd really appreciate your thought, thank you!

Lol @ Chipotle. Your status too :joyful:

The interstate system is a good one. Light bulb seems cliche, but it's true. Thank you for your thoughts man!

I just Googled "underrated inventions" and ones that seem cool are the zipper and ballpoint pens.

The zipper sticks in my mind for sure.

I need drink some coffee, decide and write very soon.

Running water/sewer systems.

Imagine no laundry machines, clean water, toilets, showers...

Maybe I'm confusing underrated with taken for granted, I was thinking the pencil as well.

I can only think of Penicillin (I can´t remember the last time I thought about it, it´s simply taken for granted).
Or maybe the Wheel and the Printing Press^^

Coffee machines... those things make the world run

I would think the world would experience an enormous loss in productivity if we removed/reduced coffee

I can't help thinking that I would use this as way to farm business ideas from my students if I were a teacher.

Those were good! The only times I was without those for longer than 24 hours was when I was camping or during my unsuccessful hunting trips. I had clean water though, but I brought it myself.

I was able to tolerate it (only 2-5 days though) and didn't even know I smelled until I was told, lol.

Nice ones! I definitely underrate the importance of penicillin or anything like it.

Oh man that's an epic one! I'm making some right now and didn't even think about it, lol.

Haha, I was about to point that out too! This thread seems to be getting some "idea muscles" (as J. Altucher calls it) working. :D

.
.

Thank you everyone they were all great and now I need to decide between them all. It might be a good idea to continue to brainstorm though or spontaneously make threads like these again over time.

Those two for sure! I don't know why (there are so many other impactful ones) but when I thought of sewing machines it hit me...

All or most of our clothes depend on the use of sewing machines. I never even think of that too.

A World Without Clothes? ... A World With No Clothes? ...
Have to think of more titles /headlines.

If I choose it, one of those might be my title.

Coffee Machine, Sewing Machine, Laundry Machine. For some reason imagining how it would be without those machines gets to me.

bitcoin. j/k.

You've got some good ones here.. just had to say bitcoin.

More serious;

Microwave. I literally can't function without a microwave.

Frozen dinners.

Ramen.

Haha! I bet my professor never heard of a bitcoin.

Microwaves are definitely underrated. I personally don't use them much though, but I did in the past.

Cash Registers.

That's a good one, thank you. Also, ATM machines for convenience.

@DanielTArgueta I love the titles you are coming up with. Maybe you should start a side hustle where you help new authors come up with awesome titles for their ebooks?

Thank you! The "A Dull New World" idea came from the "Brave New World" book title. So not too original. I've been studying copywriting and I've considered that. I was going to make a progress thread about copywriting too.

There were so many good ones making it hard to choose, but the refrigerator is what I am going to go with. I'm super short on time and need to write quick :writing::nailbiting: Thank you everyone!

How about money? It's a brilliant invention!

Last second change, thank you.

That's what I'll go with!

For all my past essays I've been writing about things I learned outside of school. That's something I looked into quite a bit in the past.

Fiat currency.

I actually mentioned it in my previous assignment. How our perception of value is strange and fiat currency being one of the examples.

I would say money is quite possibly the most overrated thing in existence.

I agree with that statement. I used the word underrated in some of my responses, but that's not accurate. The effects of money/currency is something that is much more significant than people realize. It matches the instructions. ^
