Gaining twitter followers as an author

I finally got around to opening a twitter account in my pen name. Of course, that means I start with zero followers. Not exactly a huge crowd for a sales pitch. A question for fastlaners with a decent sized following:

How did you do it?

I imagine I'll go back and edit all of my published work to add my @author name twitter page to it, but aside from that, how do you proceed?

Who's the target market?

What movies they watch, what TV shows, what books the read? Go and search those on Twitter and start discussing those topics. Do not pitch at all at first, Twitter is not for pitching. It's to build up relationships. If you post cool comments, people will start following you. Repeat it through out the season of those TV shows for example, every time they go on air, there is ton of chatter going on around it. Be part of it, every week it will be a chance to chat with people and some will follow you. From there on, pitch in like 1 in every 10 tweets, maybe even 15 tweets.

A good book about this is Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuk so pick it up and read the case studies!
