Made this thread on request. Yes I have two threads going. The other one's a long-term strategy, so it's cool okay...

So, I made a video the other day where I went into 3 restaurants and talked with them about promoting local deals on Instagram. It all went pretty well, but I was just doing it for the video. Later I decided to go further and see what I could make of it using Instagram & expanding the opportunity to include businesses beyond restaurants.

In House
• Launched an Instagram page
• Launched corresponding Facebook page
• Launched 1-page website linking to Instagram
• Launched pic on Instagram stating in 2 weeks local stores will offer tons of free deals, & to follow if they want the deals.
• Launched Craigslist ad linking to Instagram
• Launched Facebook Ad Campaign with freebie offer linking to Instagram

In Town
• Posted a couple of flyers around town linking to Instagram
• Cased businesses for early adapters
• Pitched 4 businesses on freebie deal offers
• 2 agreed and gave dates for me to come back & pick up the offer (early next week)
• 1 was a maybe & wanted more details by email
• 1 Said no & claimed liquor laws in Texas won't allow him to do this kind of promotion
• The liquor guy was irritated that I didn't set an appointment first.
• He mentioned checking the Chamber of Commerce for business info so I can set appointments.
• Went to Chamber of Commerce. They wouldn't help me without paying $250/mo to be a member.
• Chamber sent me to a Small Business Development Center across town & gave me 1 referral number.
• Drove across town to SBDC and chatted for a bit. Not much use either. Seems small businesses are small for a reason.

End of Day
• 10 Local Instagram followers
• 3 or 4 of those followers are local businesses
• Totally exhausted
• 2 businesses on board,
• 3 international chains pending corporate approval

Learnings & Next Steps
• Many stores have "no soliciting" signs. The one I pitched wasn't very open to listening to me.
• Appointments seem preferred in my town. Will adjust fire and try again tomorrow.
• Received 2 referrals from an individual in a local grocery store. Will follow up with them tomorrow.
• Received info about the corporate office of the grocery store and that they like to participate in stuff like this.
• Will call several corporate offices tomorrow to bypass local bottleneck general managers.
• Will begin cold-calling other local businesses to save time and gas.
• Will begin limited cold-emailing tomorrow to see if it bears fruit at all.
• Need to work on the pitch and clearly stating what I'm doing in less time.
• Not everyone understood that there was no cost to them. Need to make that more clear.
• Not everyone saw the value in social media marketing. Need to make that more clear.
• Will target small service businesses first, then corporate offices to save time & refine my pitch.

That was day 1.

It's a pretty big claim to make... "7 Days of Freebies" by 12/7/15, especially starting from scratch.

If it works, I've got something. If not I stumble, trip, fall, roll, and keep going.

Anyway, thread requested. Thread made. Now I'm off to pass out into a comatic sleep.

P.S. What did you do today?

Note he also discovered another huge opportunity for small businesses:

• Went to Chamber of Commerce. They wouldn't help me without paying $250/mo to be a member.
• Chamber sent me to a Small Business Development Center across town & gave me 1 referral number.
• Drove across town to SBDC and chatted for a bit. Not much use either. Seems small businesses are small for a reason.

How can you make 'this' easier to get more B2B opportunities flowing?

Day 2

• Figured out why Facebook ads weren't running and got them online
• Got about 1,000 views, but only 19 click through's and maybe 1 or 2 actual follows
• I think people may not use Instagram that much in this town, but uncertain yet
• Reviewed JB's Straightline Persuasion prior to launching cold-calls
• Waited until afternoon for calls and started around 1:30
• First 10 businesses were local service bus. and all decision makers were out for the holiday
• Ran into a problem with Straightline, because I didn't have the names of the decision makers
• Made sure to ask for gatekeepers' names, decision makers' names, and when a good time to call again is.

• Moved on to Martial Arts studios - First call was a success & they agreed to share deals
• When I finished pitching the main deal, I pitched them on the idea of a 10/90 agreement for traffic I bring
• They accepted, so I officially have my first paid deal agreement
• Called 2 other studios. 1 decision maker was out, the other was very excited but asked me to call back tomorrow for deals.

• Switched gears to coffee shops. 1st shop's owner wasn't in so I left a message with limited-time offer.
• Second coffee shop, not in so I left another message with limited-time offer
• 3rd coffee shop totally defensive from the start. Said they already have deals running and try back after first of the year.
• I tried pitching the 3rd shop to let me promote the deals they're already running to my following for free. She said no?! - small minds eh
• 4th coffee shop, very excited but decision-maker just stepped out. Asked me to wait for them to call back today or call back tomorrow because he's sure they can do something for this.

• Called local zoo. Actually reached a marketing person. She's interested but has to run it up the chain. Asked me to email the info.

• Called some bakeries, no luck, mainly because they're really busy for Thanksgiving. Probably not the best time to launch an idea like this lol.

• Followed up on the 2 referrals I got at the grocery store.
• First referral no answer, so I left a message.
• Second referral ecstatic about the idea, and she's in.

Didn't make it around to calling corporate offices yet. I'm wondering if my promo date is too soon. Tomorrow I'll follow up on emails and call corporate offices instead of local to see what happens.

Key Takeaways From Today
Felt extremely nervous and anxious prior to first calls
• Was able to get a lot of decision maker names just by asking
• Older business owners are less enthused about the idea - stuck in old ways
• Younger business people seem very excited
• Introducing as Lex DeVille with Daily Deals Abilene worked well for not getting hung up (with correct tonality lol)
• Referrals work well when you reach them
• Nobody hung up on me
• Some people desperately want this service even though others think it's stupid
• Allow more time for deal-making next time
• Don't launch business ideas when people are super busy with holiday stuff
• Listen to motivating music to pump you up before cold calls ;)

Oh and I started listing the businesses who are on board with pics on Instagram, hoping ppl will start to pic up and tag friends. I did have a few ppl tag others, but not many so far. Not really sure how I'm gonna grow the following if the Facebook ads don't work, but I'll come up with something. Decided to launch an email list as a backup for Instagram and if all else fails we can pitch deals both places. :)

I guess that's it for now. Another day down. 100% exhausted again. Now to do my schoolwork.

Love your hustle. Will follow this thread!

Do you see a pattern of mindset/objections when you offering your services?

So far there's really been 2 main issues blocking me from moving forward:

1. Decision-makers not in until after the holiday (next week)
2. I've had trouble explaining the service & getting across that it's free.

#2 is lethal because it makes me seem like I dunno my own service (which sorta feels true lol)

On the other end my Facebook ads are getting people to like the link, but not follow, so I only have like 35 followers so far.

@tafy suggests going to radio stations to see if they'll do an interview and announce the service to get businesses on board.

Right now it feels like I'm in a bit of a catch22 where people don't follow because there's not many deals & I don't have much to show businesses yet.

But I know the real issue isn't either of those...

It's a whole lot of fear that's trying to strangle the life out of me, and as I push it aside this thing will grow.

The followers are still small but they are growing. 11 > 16 > 35, just gotta hit the right combo & it'll go fast.

Or I'll experience a compounding effect over time. Either way it's growing.

On a bright note I have 2 more places pending locally that should be sealed early next week.

I'll likely push the date back just a bit, because I didn't really plan around the holiday well.

Wednesday
• Made connections with influencers at a military family readiness center.
• Made connections with Texas Workforce Solutions & got info for their business developer to meet next week
• Pitched a local bakery/coffeeshop on a walk-in. At first he was defensive until he said "unless it's free"
• I talked with that guy for a bit, and he said he'd put in a good word with the owner (he is the GM) & to follow up on Tuesday
• Met the minister of a mega-church with a coffeeshop and got on good grounds with him.
• He explained their process for advertising, and will put in a good word. (Coffeeshop was closed for the holiday)

Thursday
• Ate pie

Friday
• Gathered local newspaper ads to seek out individual business services such as hair & nail / massage / makeup etc.
• Most locals in those areas have no clue how to advertise or spread the word about their business.
• Read up on how to approach radio stations for interview.
• Looks like I need to know which show I want to interview on first.
• Apparently talk-shows are what I'm looking for.

Biggest Challenge
• Overcoming my own excuses about why I shouldn't do a thing right now.

Awesome man! Best of luck with this and I'll be following a long.

Also send me a message if you want an insight on how you could target people in your town and gain followers on the account quickly.

I think you need to change your mindset slightly when approaching businesses

Your helping them! The people who will benefit the most out of this are the local businesses.
Your offering them a free service, remember to mention that!
Only if the customer and businesses get value then do you get important as the connector.

Your getting small amount of followers because there are no deals yet, word of mouth isnt working for you yet. But it will, so stay calm. Radio will help you, especially if you get them to shoutout your deals when you start releasing them.

When the free deals are flowing one person will tell 4 and they will tell their friends and family.

Lex is going an amazing execution guys! Groupon should be scared.

Day - I dunno cuz I forgot what day of the week it is.

Today started out exceptionally difficult. I knew what I had to do, but I didn't want to do it. I waited until around 10 to go out and start pitching businesses. When the time came I wasn't ready and I found excuses for why I couldn't go yet or wasn't quite ready.

Finally about 10:30 I made it out the door and went to my housing office to chat up the ladies there and try to get warmed up. They were friendly so I talked with them about what I'm doing and asked where they would want deals from. I also did this with social media prior to leaving. I figured it would be easier to pitch businesses if I could say people were asking for deals from them already.

After warm-up I started after some donut shops, but after trying 2 and discovering the manager wasn't there and may be at one of their other locations, I felt an extreme sense of hopelessness. It wasn't just the challenge of driving all over town looking for people I don't know. It was that when I tried to share the idea with the shop staff it came out all jumbled and I sounded like a fool. I took some (perceived) hard blows and wanted to go home...

But I didn't.

Morning
• Followed a lot of people on social media
• Posted images of food porn like donuts and coffee and asked "Where do you want donut deals from?"
• This got my followers engaged and they named several places
• Speaking of followers, I'm far beyond the measly 35 I had in my last post. Now I have 400 locals.
• Posted a few other images with questions to get users engaged & paying attention
• Thanked users who commented individually one-at-a-time by tagging them in a comment

Mid-Day
• Warmed-up talking by chatting ladies at housing office
• Picked up first official deal from printing place
• Pushed back date of 7-day deals by 1 week
• Approached 2 donut shops and did not reach decision maker
• Tried to share idea with shop staff and failed miserably
• Sat in the Jeep for a long time and almost went home
• Didn't go home.
• Regrouped and drove all the way across town to another donut shop - just missed decision maker
• Pitched to this shop - slightly better, but not quite there - Asked where they want deals from. They said "Primetime entertainment".
• Went across town to another shop and bought 2 donuts hoping they'd at least reciprocate with DM info
• Turns out the guy selling the donuts was the DM, but I couldn't get him to do a deal
• He was interested but said he uses another service. He asked me to return in January to approach a new market they're after.
• Drove across town to first coffeeshop, bought coffee and pitched casually. DM not in yet - come back at 1pm.
• Made friends with all employees at the coffeeshop.

Afternoon
• Tried pitching a hair-salon - DM not in.
• Pitched a spa/salon - DM not in, but really liked the idea. Made friends with staff.
• Pitched an independent hair salon - interested and wants more info - permission to return
• Pitched nail salon next door - Asian woman instantly shut me down - very rude
• Back to coffeeshop - DM not in, but he wasn't actually DM - Real DM is out til next week but they like the idea.
• Drove wayyy out of town toward other coffeeshop, remember Primetime is on the way so stopped there.
• Got DM first try. Primetime is on board and wants to do frequent deals. This is a HUGE win.
• Continued to coffeeshop. 2nd time I've visited. DM out to lunch. Made friends with staff and got Cell number.
• Out of gas, phone dead, completely exhausted - went home.
• Charged phone and called cell. DM ecstatic about doing deals with me. Another win!

Key Takeaways
Virtually every single business asked for business cards - I'll get some made
• I feel like I'm getting a lot of "nos" but I'm really just not getting a lot of DMs
• When I get the DM most are actually catching on pretty fast
• Wanted to go home, but if I did I wouldn't have landed those 2 key businesses
• Didn't feel warmed up until I started chatting more and pitching less
• Refining my pitch and making it a little clearer is helping and getting easier
• Watch some motivational videos on YouTube before you go to town pitching people
• When you watch videos that remind you that this is the hard part where everyone quits, it helps
• When you feel like quitting, talk to someone who supports your goals to help lift you up
• No matter how alone you feel, you're not. No matter how much you want to do it on your own, you can't.
• Just connect with people.
• Just do it.

Next Steps
• Increase followers to 1,000+
• Contact radio station
• Bring on help with managing social media so I can focus on bringing clients
• Business cards

Damn I wanna post more, but this is the hardest grind I've ever done. So far it's 10x harder than I imagined, but something noteable happened today so I had to share.

I know a lot of you get to points when you doubt yourself, or you're not sure if you should continue. You make excuses for why it's okay not to do that thing you need to do. I get those same feelings, and there's so many times I just want to stop.

But what if?

What if that point you stop at was just shy of the mark? What if that next post you didn't make was the one that changed someone's life? What if that next lead you didn't pitch would have been your biggest sale?

What if?

That's what keeps me pushing. Just one more.

Today it payed off.

I almost skipped an appointment this morning because I didn't think the decision maker would show. I left at the last minute and arrived on time at a small bar - nothing special. Knocked on the door, but no one was there. Knocked again. Waited. Nothing. Got back in my car and almost left...but what if?

A few minutes later an SUV pulls up with a woman inside. I assume it's the DM and introduce myself. It's not the DM and I look like an a$$. Oh well. She's a bartender and lets me inside (it's 9:30am).

We chat for a bit, and it's really awkward at first. She's half asleep and I dunno what to say. So I just ask questions and tell her what I'm doing. I ask her where she wants deals from and who she knows that I can talk to. Got a few leads from her, so it was a small win.

When 15 minutes pass I'm ready to leave. Dunno what else to say to this girl and DM isn't showing. Waited another minute. Watched paint dry. Come on... where's the DM? Minute. Minute. Minute. At 30 minutes late I finally stood to leave. I'd waited 15 minutes more than originally planned, and now it's time to go.

I head toward the entrance and almost reach the door when it swings open - a small dark silhouette of a woman enters through golden sunlight. It's the DM. Holy shit... 1 minute sooner and I would have missed her. Time for round 2.

We head to the bar and sit for a chat. I tell her what I'm doing and we run into road block after road block with Texas regulations. I want to promote her, but it's hard to do without breaking the law because of alcohol restrictions. But I didn't give up and kept coming up with solutions to help make this happen. I really need some nightlife on board.

Eventually we figure out ways to make this work, and DM is really excited about the opportunity. We chat more about other businesses and I get several DM names for other restaurants in town. Then DM looks to bartender girl and says "You know what he needs? He needs someone who knows everyone in town." She says she has a friend who knows a lot of people. I hesitated to push for more info... I didn't want to. But I did. I asked how to contact her and it was just the right thing to say because she responded with, "Well, I'll call her right now!"

So she calls her friend and chats over the phone, and somehow this all turns into her friend driving across town to meet me at the bar. Soon her friend shows up and we introduce. She's a senior exec at a local radio group, and she does indeed have a lot of connections. So now all of us chat and I get LOADS of info including businesses to try, DM names, info about getting radio interviews, the best way to connect with people in town...etc. etc.

And since I already wanted contacts in radio, this really couldn't have come at a better time. All because I didn't skip the appointment. All because I held out just a little longer. All because I pushed just a little harder.

This is easily my biggest networking connection so far, and after buying her a few drinks and ignoring the fact it was only 10:30 in the morning, we really hit it off and have a brand new solid relationship.

So I guess this post is both an update and hopefully a bit of inspiration for those of you feeling hard doubts.

Sure it's easier to not do that thing. Sure it's more comfortable to not make that call. Quitting is always easier.

But before you call it quits, you might just wonder...

what if one more push is all it takes...?

A small update from the last couple days.

Yesterday was my last day in the National Guard, so that won't consume part of my month anymore!

Local followers are over 1,500.

I added these companies for freebie deals starting next week:

• Honda dealership
• Anytime Fitness
• Local liquor store
• National Guard Recruitment

Strong Leads:

• Wing Stop
• Little Ceasers
• Local Steak House
• Another Vape store
• A local burger joint

Today I'm following up with several leads, and confirming some of the deals that are already happening.

Pretty sure I'll have free donuts & free pizza deals confirmed by tomorrow.

Still need to start contacting corporate offices. Keep meaning to do this, but get sidetracked a lot.

Had 3 businesses contact me through social media so far to ask how to promote with us.

One of the next steps is to figure out how to move these people from freebie deals to ongoing paid deals.

Not sure how to get my service stuck in their mind so they remember to run deals at all. People have a lot going on.

So I need a way to either be in contact frequently, or to have the service in front of them frequently.

Of course if it goes amazing from the start they'll probably remember more easily.

Man, I read this whole thing non-stop. This is absolutely inspiring and my a$$ was on edge when you said the DM at the bar walked in 1 minute later when you were 1 minute away from leaving. Seriously! That bit of perseverance landed you an awsome connection.

I really admire your hustle and you going out and getting businesses on board. I am going to be sending your hustle story to a few friends of mine. I learned a few things from your experiences and hope you share even more.

Awsome, awsome, AWSOME thread.

This is a LONG shot...but....my Daughter's boyfriend works at a coffee shop inside a Mega Church in TX. Could it be the same one ? :nailbiting: PM me if you want. If it is the same...it's a good 'in' for you.

And....from my conversations with him, there are a LOT of business owners in his church.

Yesterday was awesome. Today kinda meh...

Yesterday

• A big pizza/arcade joined for deals
• Owner of local salon/spa with multiple independents loved the idea
• He gave me a bunch of referrals that will be useful this week
• Will likely have deals going with them by the end of the year
• To-Go Hibachi restaurant said they'd have deals by Tuesday

Today

• Cupcake place - liked the idea, but no deals. Said they are so busy they can't take any more customers.
•• I asked if they are planning to expand since they have so many people. "Absolutely not" ?!
• 1st pizza place - owner not in, left card
• Subway, got name / number for district manager
• Chucky Cheeze - left card with guy who probably threw it in the trash
• Coffeeshop that I followed up with from last week - DM isn't real DM again! She took bus. card. Will follow up in a few days.
• To-Go Hibachi became a no-go after talking about it with his partner
•• Said they're already running too many promotions. He still sounded interested, but can't make the decision alone.
•• Also said their current ads bring in plenty of people, including the $1,500 a month they spend on televised ads.
•• $1,500 vs. Free?!
• Marketstreet grocery store - First grocery store I've tried. Interested, but their chain only works with non-profits...blah
• Spanish restaurant - DM not at this location. He's across town at the North store today.
• 2nd Pizza Place - went here on a referral. DM not in yet, will be there in 20. Left to next place, came back. DM still not in.
• Texas Roadhouse - Entertained me, but said it's the worst time of year because Christmas brings a lot of people in & they have deals ongoing.
• Local Tap House - Not open until later in the day. F.
• Oh, and I missed the donut shop because I thought they were open later than they were.

Overall today felt off. After the tap house I was done. Felt like something just wasn't right in the world today.

My pitches were fine. I wasn't nervous, and feel pretty comfortable describing the service now.

I overhauled the website to set up variations of the service. Free, $5 solo promo, $5 subscription, $15 subscription.

There was one small win.

The other coffeeshop I've been working with sent their first deals through the site, so not only did I get those deals, it was a nice functionality test.

Time to regroup, recharge, and get ready to go again.

@SinisterLex .... I found this an interesting read on Groupon if you're interest.

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/much-money-groupon-make-will-last/

An interesting read for sure. @tafy and I have been discussing Groupon's demise a lot lately.

The huge commission they take is a real problem.

Every time I feel like this won't work, Groupon reminds me why it can.

My structure is pretty different from theirs. Just a matter of growing it.

I'm at the ground level right now, but in time it will grow.

Thanks for sharing.

Are you offering social media marketing of some sort?

I really like how earlier in the thread you mentioned the "what if"

ya know, what if I just give it 1 more shot? or what if this or that

edit:

re-read the op, no questions as of now. I will definitely be returning to this thread

Great thread! Bravo.

How are you checking traffic to their website from your links?

I'm not. This isn't like Groupon.

That's why I'm not worried about posting in the general progress threads.

Gotta be able to make shit happen in real life, beyond the internet for this one.

Gotta be different, and do things differently.

Won't work as just another copied internet affiliate service.

99% can't do it.

The other 1% are busy executing stuff they're already working on.

Very true stuff there. That answers a ton of questions I had, without even answering them all at the same time. You mentioned, though, that you were doing a 10/90 agreement, how are you measuring that?

Also, I don't think I ever thanked you for the copywriting thread. I think this will be a very similar one.

Decided not to do 10/90, so not tracking anything like that.
