I've always liked all your threads on here. One big thing I like about this one is it contains faults, things a lot of people would never air out about themselves. Why? Because a lot of people lack accountability and ownership. Great example of taking ownership for your decisions here, I always seem to learn something from you.

My boss at my last job has a huge gambling problem, like, monumental. He always let off that he was a big winner, driving his AMG CLS63, always buying new gadgets, etc. Sure enough, the more I got to know him the more the truth began emerging. Come to find out, he's not so good at it. More than $100k in debt and a sidewalk mindset. Really showed me what I didn't want to do

The mindset change has been swift and brutally awesome.

I haven't been overly productive, still getting things done, but the stress and anger has evaporated instantly.

Watching 'Ballers' right now haha. Life is good, and getting better.

Let me know if you want an affiliate link to FanDuel for daily fantasy sports. Just kidding!

Congratulations on kicking the poker habit man, like you said it is not worth it in the end as it will just eat away at your time for the chance at minimal if any profits.

Keep us updated on your progress and make sure to unsubscribe from any e-mails from the poker company trying to lure you back in.

As of midnight tonight, it will be one full month again since I've stopped gambling.

Haven't really been super productive in that time, but the stress and anger has gone down significantly.. like a 90% reduction. People in my life have commented numerous times that they notice a difference. Some people have said it's like I'm a completely different person. I appreciate those words, and I can definitely see it.

The outcome of an insignificant sporting event no longer determines how I'm going to be feeling the next day.

It's nice.

^^^ that's a great result.

Hard to be super productive though, when you're signing all those autographs as the famous cyclist who walks on water. ;)

When Seattle lost last night due to a closer that should be playing golf instead, I felt like breaking my laptop screen (even though what I lost would be equivalent to a new laptop)... I know exactly what you mean.

So I'm sitting here waiting for the train surrounded by drunks and homeless people in the middle of the night. I've had enough of this.

Unlike many I've got an insanely supportive family and this great community. I have my health. I'm squandering such gifts on a crap lifestyle that I no longer want to be apart of. I can do so much better.

Anyway I haven't ruined my life or gone broke or anything lmao, it's mostly the time wasted. I play poker probably 40-60hrs a week. Got nothing better to do.. That will have to change now.

The goal is 1 year of zero gambling of any kind. Stock market does not count.

Other than just posting milestones I'll most likely include positive lifestyle changes.

Not having to do anything is a blessing and a curse. I'm young and dumb enough that my past mistakes are trivial.

Let's do this! (well in the case of gambling.. Let's not do this!) lmao

Nothing but positive changes ahead!

Five bucks says you fail.

LMAO.

Jk.

Good luck.

@RBefort , please start another thread if you want to continue your topic.

I have no intention for this to become a 'let's discuss the merits of poker' thread.

As I see it, there are virtually zero merits to the game, and the only reason a very small portion of players can succeed is because the game itself is predatory and feeds on the other 99.9% of players that are so delusional as to think they can succeed.

I don't want to discuss this beyond this post. I don't care about hourly win rates, I don't care about potential winnings. I just don't care. Specifically the last few paragraphs I actually find to be rather insulting given the topic of this thread is gambling addiction.

This thread is solely for myself and for those who may also have an addiction of some sort, could be gambling, drinking, sex, whatever. I want to show how great life can become when you rise above your vices.

Please don't update this thread. Not interested, and you can easily start your own if you feel the need.

Passed the 2 month mark and I didn't even notice! Last night I threw the last $1 poker chip that I had into the river. Going to check to see if it's still there in a bit haha.

So much less stress in my life. I'm pretty sure there's no going back, but have to stay vigilant of course. I'm watching the WSOP broadcasts that started two weeks ago and yet I have no desire to play. I don't mind watching other people make and lose money gambling ;)

One of the best decisions I've made thus far.

Keep going. Did you get rid of all the books? The cards, chips, etc you have laying around the house. Think of a future partner or children and how this has a cause and effect on them. Basically you're not just affecting your life, but everyone's lives who have to help you or bail you, because you have no where to live, eat, or sleep. It's a hard lesson to learn for everyone who knows you even if they're not making the choice. Just a friendly reminder for you to stay on track. :)

Yeah, all that stuff is long gone. (although that last chip is still in the river.. went and checked).

No kids and no significant other for the forseeable future. I'm a money making monk.

To the OP: Go to a Gamblers Anonymous meeting. It's easy to white knuckle for a couple of months, but unless you make some real changes in your life, you'll go back as soon as an opportunity arises.

And "testing yourself" by watching WSOP events? F*cking terrible idea.

People get addicted to different things. I can have a beer once every couple months and think nothing of it. Put me in a casino and I won't stop. It's good that you've discovered that gambling isn't for you.

Good luck.

My background: 5+ years of recovery and counting. 12 step programs saved my life.

I watch the show because I enjoy it. I'm not testing myself.

I think some people in this thread have misconstrued the level in which gambling was an issue in my life. It took up a lot of my time and was a time suck, but I was never near broke or spending all of my money. I was simply spending all of my time. That was the problem.

I'd say I've lost about $15,000 over the years gambling. In that time period I've made roughly 80x that via traditional business ventures and employment. I was never at risk of going broke. Gambling was stealing my time.

Now that I've got much better things going on in my life, the desire to gamble is gone. I've moved to an awesome place, things to do all the time, etc. Before when I was gambling my life lacked purpose and was just boring.

The above point became clear to me when I went to play a $40 tournament a month or two back. It was boring as shit, being surrounded by sad old people. The desire to gamble is completely gone, because the alternative (of actually having an interesting life) is so much better.
