Enjoyed today's show. Can't put in my notes since I'm on the road after a rental equipment breakdown, but I will say I didn't realize how useful godaddy was. I thought they just had... Interesting commercials...

For some reason, I thought the week you did the SBA show you took off. Guess not.
I'll listen to that tomorrow afternoon. Looking forward to hearing about a government agency that's helpful to an entrepreneur.

Get a kindle. A used one only costs $35. Bring it everywhere and read while waiting for people/places/etc.
You can also use the kindle app on your phone. That's what I do, then if I want to make notes about something, I just pop over to evernote right then and there.

I can't see the phone that well, even with my glasses. I just find it easier to read on the kindle.

I just listened to the most recent podcast. I'm also really into Google's apps and products! They released a new Chromebook that has a 15 inch screen. If you did buy one, I hope you got that one.

For more business related resources (I mentioned a personal one before) these might be worth looking into.

https://www.uberconference.com/

Free Conference Calls
(There's others like it, but I like that the co-founder previously founded what is now Google Voice and Yahoo! Voice -- good track record).

https://slack.com/

Group File Sharing / Messaging

I used them for a group project for a college class, but it's great for team communication or conferencing.

Good show today!
I've never really considered self-publishing to be my entrance ramp to the fastlane though. Some takeaways I had:

-I didn't realize Amazon was such a small percent of the total eBook market (30-35%), or that RDPD was independently published initially.

-The authors that are "with" a big publishing company have a receptive audience or following; they're certainly professionally edited, but with enough (value-based) hustle on any author's end and market demand for their content, YOU could be the next hit/success.

-Add value to your target audience without trying to sell them your media. Establishing rapport, personal credibility and free advice will help create a following for your work, as always, but it seems like this is a more crucial element than in the product market....

-Short shortsightedness as an entrepreneur when seeking "profitable" margins, with crazy MOQ's. Well, 2k is far from crazy, but it's a lot of inventory if you don't have significant sales already established. Don't be pound foolish. Zappos lost money on lots of shoes in the beginning when they paid retail for the inventory. But they established the concept and didn't run out to load up on fresh new inventory before the numbers showed there was a market.

I like his ending line, "a book is the modern business card." Not sure if that's entirely true, but an interesting thought, nonetheless.

Dave just curious as I'm listening right now to the SP podcast... did you have to license the intro music by Dire Straits or is that licensed through the station?

The station does all of the production work. It's Clear Channel/iHeartRadio, so they take care of everything and every aspect of production. One of the huge benefits of having a large sugar daddy as my producer.

This Saturday, you get to hear from my son Luke for the first time. Luke is an automotive guru, and we talk a lot about cars. Car design trends, car maintenance, and a bit about the automotive aftermarkets parts business. Even if you are not in to cars, the discussion is centric to thinking differently about business. In 2015, for the first time ever the online portion of the automotive aftermarket industry will exceed $6,000,000,000. Amazon controls 30% of that along with the Amazon marketplace vendors. Within the six billion dollar online market for aftermarket car stuff, you can find your fast lane.

Saturday at 12PM central time... you can stream or download the show from Twin Cities News Talk or search for Mind Your Business podcast on iTunes.

It was a little rough due to a content change, and due to the fact that he was brand new... but like in all things it's a game of repetitions. We had fun doing it, though.

We're coming back this Saturday for the first blast of 2015 of Mind Your Business... with an "Entrepreneur's Tool Kit" talking about free resources we use every day, from how we use Gmail to Dropbox, etc...

We'll also touch on GoDaddy, BigCommerce, Feedback Genius, and a few other tools we use all the time. We'll also talk about how to negotiate office space or virtual offices with Regus.

Anything you want to add? We can make some honorable mentions if you have "must use" resources for entrepreneurs that don't cost much if anything.

What resources do you find critical for a start-up entrepreneur?

Looking forward to it! This will be my first episode of the show. :greedy:

V,

It's been nuts around here lately and I've been slacking on the shows. Just caught up and I'm really impressed with the progression of it all. I know I've said it before but it's really quite impressive. Keep inspiring my friend.

I'm loving the podcasts! I still have a few I need to catch up on, but they sound really, really good. They're engaging, informative, and cover some great topics. I also really like the choices in intro music.

On ITunes, there's something I noticed for what it's worth -- your episode descriptions are a bit shorter than average, at least compared to the other podcasts on my list. Where your episode descriptions are 5-10 words per episode, the other podcasts have descriptions that are quite a bit longer, maybe 50-60 words on average, and sometimes a whole lot longer. I wonder if it might be worthwhile to flesh them out a little.

Aside from maybe helping to gain new listeners, longer descriptions might be beneficial down the road when new subscribers start browsing old episodes, hoping to pick up some of the great stuff they missed. Also, I'm betting that as you continue the show, you'll start hitting topics more than once, but from a different angle or with a more specialized focus. Longer descriptions might help you differentiate among those.

Agree. On other podcasts with hundreds of episodes, I use the description to determine what I will listen to.

Additionally, is there a bio? What are your credentials? What makes you an SME? Why should someone listen to your podcast instead one of the other small business ones? Forum users know of you but what about John Q Public who is searching through iTunes, etc?

FYI - Your show is not on Stitcher but there is another show with the same name that covers SEO.

How's the new chrome Book working out Dave?

Kicks a$$. Love it actually. Very simple, very fast, very intuitive. Very Google. Also love the fact that it came with 2 years worth of 1TB Google Drive storage.

I am using a desktop iMac for the heavy lifting, and the Chromebook for everything else. There's very little that I do personally that the Chromebook can't do. For our office, we will still be all about Macs, but for my own personal use (and travelling) this thing is the shit... and very cheap.

I just bought a couple of iPhone 6's today, and the first thing I did was add all of the google suite of products to them. :)

I don't Have a lot of action through my email as of now. But I like how you explained your set up. everything's integrated, Doesn't even matter what "machine" your using, Or where you are. your Business is at your finger tips. I don't quite understand the cloud but i'm researching it.
I'm thinking about picking up that chrome book soon to. Let's my wife have the lap top when I'm working on Posts and write ups.

It has taken us some new discipline to routinely create and keep documents in Google Drive. However, since all of our devices now do that as a feature, it's easier. Also, we don't have to email documents back and forth any more internally.

I think the hardest "habit" to break is using Microsoft word vs. Google Docs, but the Chromebook makes that a non-issue.

Being a huge auto-enthusiast, I really liked this show. The new Ford GT is absolutely gorgeous, I agree. It'll have some solid competition though, between the mid-engine Corvette coming up, the twin turbo 458, the next gen R8, etc.

Interesting that Amazon is holding 30% of the auto aftermarket. It shouldn't be a surprise, I guess, given their entry into (or into hosting, as you said) every market, but it's certainly not the first name I think of for vehicle parts or info.
Going to see who's doing the sales of their top selling auto products. Wish RockAuto was publicly traded so I could see their sales.
Good point on operating in the auto industry set in niches that either haven't been popularized in the US or just are "component" parts that compete on price, not on brand name.

The phrase "master of everything, specialist in none"- besides being a catchy phrase, I'd say it's a business model, and it's hugely successful for Amazon, but I don't know that you always have to replicate that for success... That is, there are many "jack of one trade, master of none" models that work well too, I think. Pretty much any store (b&m or online) that specializes in one product/category.

I say that because I often look for successful examples of company's operating by entirely different business models, weighing their "successes" against each other, and trying to use that as some kind of baseline about which model is "better." But I think I'm looking at it the wrong way (i.e. successful company=better business model) when the answer to that is really just a question of which model will provide the most value to the customer in that area- and if you're breaking into a competitive market, that could be some tweaking/innovating of current processes, or maybe just the opposite of what they're doing...

Kmart was #1 in mass market when Wal-Mart came along. Sam Walton studied the Kmart model, replicated it absent of the mistakes he saw Kmart making, and the rest was history. Sam Walton... didn't... invent... anything.

This is exactly what I'm trying to put together. Just not Automotive, But the info Dave and his son mentioned works for any niche.
