Evidently, some of us are trying to create value the hard way...all we needed to do was buy a cat with dwarfism, promote the heck out of it, and voila.....$100 million in sales :headbanger:

Some huge and wrong assumptions here IMO

"All you need to do is to buy a cat with dwarfism (...) and voila", well, that could be said for almost anything "Hey, all you need to do is create a social network (...) and voila", "Hey, all you need to do is figure out Facebook ads, get a decent product, and voila"

Just try to replicate it, you can't.

That meme has made me and my girlfriend laugh with funny captions for dozens of times now, and millions of others, it's hilarious, it entertains, hence it provides value. The difference from the other 100x figures/people used for memes? Grumpy cat owner was smart and fetched the opportunity

I'm 100% sure there was work and a well though process behind it, so no :headbanger:, :notworthy: to that pet owner for seizing the opportunity.

Or it was just blind luck. That happens too. So what?
If you're gonna think that way, start buying lottery tickets.

To me the real story behind this is how the lady went about monetizing this, and the *process* she followed to make this happen.

I agree 100% with what @Phones said above... saying "All you need to do is to buy a cat with dwarfism (...) and voila", is a classic example of event-based thinking.

I am sure there are countless people out there with weird looking pets, who are happy slaving away at a 9-5 job for the rest of their lives. This lady saw an opportunity and made it happen.

Would be very interesting to hear *that* side of the story, but I doubt we will ever get to see it on mainstream media.

Agreed. I'd like to see Andrew Warner interview this lady on Mixergy.

So true.

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there with grumpy looking animals. In fact, I'm almost certain that practically everybody has something in their life which, if marketed correctly, could be worth millions. It seems that most people don't know this, or perhaps it is just easier to continue slaving away.

Sorry to burst the convo but this is another $72 million dollar teenage story....

http://www.businessinsider.com/grumpy-cat-definitely-did-not-make-100-million-2014-12

I think the key differences here are:
  1. The lady is actually, marketing the hell out of Grumpy Cat and "making it happen" for herself
  2. She didn't lie about how much she made, and actually she was the one who set the record straight clarifying that the article about her was incorrect about the figure.
Looks like the media made up the $100M number to help sensationalize the story.

Regardless of the actual "number", I would love to hear her story / process behind creating an internet meme and being able to monetize it through PR and appearances etc.

In contrast, the "$72 million dollar teenager" was an obvious troll / liar and made no money whatsoever.

I once threw up a cat video to see how much traffic a completely unpromoted, unlinked video could naturally generate if left alone for a year.
Turns out, the answer is ~250 views

Which is funny, because it's more cold-traffic than most beginners are willing to hustle to their landing pages.
facepalm.jpg

So she made less than the required amount of 1 million?
mmm, that's my impression. Either that or at this time she's just not worth pursuing due to the numbers being unannounced/unknowable.

How about Grumpy @DennisDuty ??
???
Are you saying I should ask him to interview the cat itself?
Might make an interesting interview :-D
