But yeah, I do generally agree with your comment. We had the similar occupy movement here in the UK and I don't think it served any purpose apart from almost becoming a tourist/local attraction and even jokes. Oh, don't forget property damages. They turns a semi-decent park into a barren landfill in central London leading to the local government had re-grassing the area.
