I'd fire them ALL.

Then, I would fire anyone within three cubicles of the people responsible for this.

Totally unacceptable at any time of the year, much less today.

This is so sadly common.

I worked at a company that was doing important and revealing work on a new apple device. Tons of top industry and investment eyes were on our blog, waiting for it to go live.

Nobody accounted for the traffic difference of a normal day (a few hundred people) and an important 'reveal' day (orders of magnitude more). So our story popped, our website dropped its shorts, and all the news we got that day was how nobody could get to our website. This went on for over a week before someone figured out how to fix it, complete with server issues and connectivity issues and sporadic up and down times, etc...

Completely shifted the perception of us being "technology experts" (which was in the bloody mission statement!).

This shouldn't be a surprise to people - you need to plan for massive traffic on days you are expecting massive traffic!

They should consider following the 7 Ps:

I'm pretty sad for them. I have several friends who still need Best Buy to be viable.

I think they are using a GoDaddy free hosting account with limited bandwidth.
I hear they're on a shared hosting server with Walmart and Alibaba.

Godaddy needs to get their shit together.

What a bunch of retards :woot:

Shows once again that its SO easy to compete with the big boys.

I'm setting up managed cloud hosting on multiple AWS instances for the christmas season because I anticipate that my single managed server wont suffice at the traffic volume I will buy.

Will run me about 2-4k in hosting costs for december.

And I only have one product.

If you wanna play in the big leagues you need to put your big boy pants on.

The fact that they are still down is unreal.

Only a denial of service attack being at the root cause can save their reputation at this point.

However, from my INSIDERS perspective, that is unlikely.

And... it's not even Cyber Monday yet.

Even then, they should have a backup plan for today. Maybe they are changing their WordPress theme :D

DDoS'd by their customer base trying to give them money.

haha. Horrible. They're one of the most popular Black Friday retailers (I believe). BB's finances are so bad that they skimped on hosting? :cookoo: Good job losing tens of millions to save thousands.

That is what I was thinking. A DDOS attack would be the only legitimate explanation. I kind of doubt that it is though, because if so they probably would have announced that they are experiencing a DDOS attack.

Unreal.

Back up and running. Only... they missed all of the people searching for Black Friday store info on top of their online sales miss.

5pm Central and it's down again. This is laughably ridiculous. Likwid Concepts could handle an increase in traffic but Best Buy can't? I understand there is a different in the size of traffic, but there is also a difference in the cash they should have available do deal with this sort of thing. I can't imagine how much cash they are losing out on.

"Amazon is never down"

Maybe amazon proper, but AWS has had some pretty spectacular outage. IIRC reddit was down for two days because the AWS regional datacenter in Virginia had a major boo-boo.

Anyway the story linked by @Vigilante quoted a Best Buy representative as claiming it was due to a spike in mobile traffic. That is completely and utterly unacceptable in 2014. IBM used that pain point in one of their ads back during the dotcom 1.0 boom, when getting even two servers working with the same backend database was problematic. Nowadays we have cloud server infrastructure and hugely scalable database systems to handle EXACTLY THIS PROBLEM, so no sympathy for Best Buy from me.

For a new business owner and technical idiot such as myself. What precautions can be taken in order to avoid this? I use Hostgator shared at the moment.
