Starting this thread as more of an online diary (kind of being selfish).

I wrote some hell of a monologue of goals but proof is the pudding right?

In respect to coding and after mulling it over for a few weeks and started some marketing I have decided to learn some front end languages and one backend HTML>CSS>JS>Jqery>AJAX>PHP.
Short term goals are:
  • Learn at least the basic design/front end languages
  • Get good at creating content and customizing landing pages , squeeze pages etc....

I am not looking to create the next facebook or something I just want to be able to whip a quick site up and flesh out an idea then outsource any other programming that requires specialised knowledge.

End goal is easing into affiliate marketing as an learning experience while making some coin and putting what i learnt from copy to use.

Ok so I did pretty similar to what you're trying to do (albeit not really on purpose) so this is what I recommend:

Learn how to build a QUICK landing page, sales page, opt-in page, and info website. Basically, you just install Wordpress, load up a theme, and change the HTML/CSS for the layout. How to go about learning this:

1) Get some cheap hosting from iPage or whatever

2) Follow the instructions for installing Wordpress

3) Learn the Wordpress interface, load up W3Schools

4) Load up a theme and explore the files, changing things in accordance to what you learn in W3 schools

You'll learn this way, no doubt. Note: you will NOT learn how to become a 'real' web designer or 'real' programmer this way and your code will be messy. Don't worry about all that.

If you want to get into affiliate marketing, I also recommend learning a little bit of Photoshop too. Learn to edit an ad real quick and easy.

Copy and split-testing, though, those are the skills you should be focusing on.

Good luck

Don't need to know how to code for affiliate marketing.
Master copywriting instead. And how to drive traffic.

Will help you 1000x more.

Then just hire someone to create the LPs for you. Maybe S80-100 per page at max.

Thanks for dropping by!

I have some experience using an CMS but not enough to really modify it how I want so thats why I have been focusing on learning at least html/CSS then pick up the others along the way.

Started with w3school tuts but using code academy instead per recommendation of my cousin who teaches IT along with notepad++ , its not that I am trying to be a "real" programmer or anything I just see the need of at least knowing enough to implement a quick change and effectively modify a CMS to create what I need.

Using gimp! PS is expensive lol

Thats still my main focus but I do feel learning some basic web design isn't too bad either and its an college interest I never really got to explore.

Treehouse has one of the best courses for HTML/CSS - Get their free trial, finish the course and cancel it (google the offer if it's not on their homepage). You're welcome.

I've used CA

HTML/CSS is easy though, you'll be efficient in a month or less depending how much time you put in.

Learning to code is a waste of time, IMHO.

There are millions of people on elance, odesk, etc. that can code anything you can cream up.

Instead, I learned how to create a vision of what I wanted, and learned how to communicate effectively with coders, programmer, and designers.

In Ready, Fire, Aim Michael Masterson said the most important skill you can have in business is selling (ex. marketing).

Affiliate marketing may be a good approach for you, but pay attention how the business models work of the products/services you're selling. Do that, and a whole new world will open up.

it will take you a couple of months to make a decent (not professional) website from scratch.

Nowadays you can have, in a matter of minutes a professional website operating online.

Thousands of templates available to you for free.

Hey @marklov ,

I've started a thread few days ago you may want to check out "Web Development Advice For Free". I talk about mindset of coding etc.

Even though I code, and pretty decent at it. I would go with what @Silverhawk851 and @JasonR are recommending. Coding to me is an essential skill, and it helps keeping the cost down when you're bootstrapping because you're doing everything yourself.

If you've ever notice sales pages are ugly as F*ck, and all it has is the copy, the sales "presentation". You could get by just learning HTML(5)/CSS(2/3) to create sales pages for your products.

Also very important, if you are going to do affiliate marketing, you need to learn about SEO more then HTML / CSS. You really don't need programming Javascript and PHP, because you can just make .html pages for each product, unless you're trying to make somewhat of a marketplace or something like that.

So in conclusion, you can learn a little HTML / CSS enough to put together 1 page, and then use your awesome SEO / CopyWriting skills to get people to spend that coin.

I may have finally seen the light and its not coding or "affiliate" marketing...

I thought it was copy the last time , coding/afm leading into other things now but I have been looking at it wrong , they are all pieces of a bigger picture and this clarity that I have now is really different than before.

yesterday and the better part of today I have been really reflecting on my desires , started to meditate on my vision , goals, brand building , "tangible" online businesses and recalling all the hundreds of posts I have read over the last few months combined with all the gold nuggets by the heavy hitters then cycled and filtered it through my mind.

I have a throbbing migraine now but Its a really strange feeling....never felt this way before.

I dont have the cash but that wont stop me I can use someone elses money "smartly" or even pre sell like a boss...

I dont need to learn to code there's are elance , odesk , cms platforms , free templates etc....

Even if I hit rock bottom I'm young , I can gather my resolve and begin climbing to the top again.

Its as if I knew these things before but its never been this clear like how it is now.

I have a list of emails and numbers , its going to be a long morning and i'm scared as F*ck but im gonna take action.

will update when finished

an update as promised..
made 200+ cold calls I lost count ( shame on me because I wanted to run the data in excel)

I started out scared as a pussycat but I soon warmed up and noticed my self abandoning that robotic tone and actually taking on a persona and it was interesting to hear myself talk lol.

Didnt think I could do it but i presold 3 of my product!

wow guys the best thing is that the money I didn't have to outsource a few things and had to code myself I can get done better than i ever could and at a fraction of the time doing it myself would take!

For now though , my focus is on marketing and delivering a kick a$$ "walks the talk" product

I need to get my microsoft word fixed it got corrupted last week and I have been taking notes off the forum by hand and is it strange I actually enjoy it?

Have a couple calls left over from today so im gonna add that to the list of numbers I gathered today get some sleep , wake up to some black coffee and repeat.

The best part of this is that I got over that fear and didn't "puss out".

Just use google docs, or Open Office, don't let MS Word slow you down.

I may have hit a wall in regards to pre selling my product I have ran out of contacts in the demographic that I have been targeting.
so far I have made over 302 cold calls , 14 presells and $1.3k in pre sales

Do I target another demographic or recall the numbers I contacted before?

I have roughly 2 days left for more preselling before I begin focusing on developing the product.

Also im F*cking excited!

Forgot to mention that :)

This is awesome, a basic mastery of at least HTML;CSS;JS;JQUERY will help a ton on your journey to success. Keep at it!

Well my product is almost finished just a few touches and it will be done just from a preview they are pretty much begging for it to be finished.

So far energy is still at an high I went from having no money to start my venture to having enough to start with minimal bootstrapping which ill have to see how it pans out because i just had some unexpected expenses pop up.....

Still I have learnt a lot in just these past few days which surprises me because when I made this thread I figured I had enough figured out to at least start but "you never know till you know" I guess lol .

Most importantly I discovered a niche where I can provide value or at least a testing grounds to build some confidence by having a positive cash flow source which is where my focus will be after I am done with what I am doing now.
