I had one person ONCE tell me to get a real job, I had a real job working 8 hours a day at the time
My response was "are you high?"
Seriously it was the most random comment (they must have just had it in stock and wanted to use it before it expired)

People can be weirdos, its not an important question

I usually don't bring up that line of questioning, and if I do its very off hand
I tell them I'm a writer and they are usually impressed.
Mostly cuz they assume I make good pay if I live off it.
I neither confirm or deny it because who cares.
I might tell them a job I did once that was interesting, or talk about what I want to do.

Or you can preface "I used to work as ______ but now I write"

I bet you are getting it because you engage on the topic
Or maybe its cuz you are saying self-publishing rather than "I write", people generally don't like when you fight on the details/make it complicated.

On several occasions people said something like: "I don't want to offend you, but don't you think you should get a 'real job' ?" or "Can you really make a living as an author?

People used to say that to me all the time. If you knew my niche it doesn't exactly scream money. I mean I barely made enough to afford my Ferrari. LOL

Thanks MJ and everyone else here for your replies!

It is really encouraging and gives me some great ideas.
I can see that confidence is key in such situations.

"Get a real job"

Everyone can't "get." In order for people to "get," someone has to "give."

I mean I barely made enough to afford my Ferrari. LOL

The best advice/comments come from the ones that've never done anything close. I'm no success by any means, but even when people find out I'm trying to start a business, they look at me like I told them I've got 5 weeks to live...

You can take the Tim Ferris route and tell them you sell drugs for a living.

It has changed over time, but nowadays I usually just go with "I build things"

From there, if they're interested, I'll elaborate. If not, I won't. I try to hide that whole "I'm better than you" bullshit, it does nothing but burn bridges.
