I don't want to go into TOO much detail... but here is the basic premise. I'm new to all of this, I'd greatly appreciate any wisdom you have for me :)

I read the book, I've been browsing this forum for a long time, I know the most important thing is to find something that there is a need for in the market, not just following your passions. I tried to keep my mind open for possibilities and look for something that "They should make"......

And the other day I had that moment. I have actually had this thought several times before. I was trying to figure out what to do that night (it was a weekend).... wasn't sure if there was anything fun going on at the clubs or bars downtown, or near the beach, or basically any event worth going to. Typing in "Things to do on Sunday night in 'my city' " came up with almost no results, basically just took me to lame tourist pages and the local newspaper....which covered more stuff for families to do. Lame stuff that no one my age (20's ) wants to do. I know all the local clubs and bars do post their event, etc, on their websites or on their FB pages...but when your trying to figure out what to do in an hour it's not practical to search the name of EVERY single bar or be a fan of EVERY club/bar on Facebook.

So in frustration, I thought to myself... "They should make a website where they list all the fun events and promotions at the local clubs and bars, or even sporting events...just fun stuff to do on the weekend, and updated every week!"

And then I went ...Duh, I could do that...

So here's the basic premise: I want to make a website that lists the current events happening each weekend in my city. I happen to live in a great place for this as there are TONS of places to go and a huge amount of clubs and bars, and several colleges.

I could break it down into a few smaller sub-categories (maybe... Clubs, Bars, Beach Area, Sports/Fights...)

The way I see it making money is this: I could go and talk to all the owners at these venues, explain the basic problem they are facing now (and we have a pretty high club turnover, they are ALWAYS looking for a way to keep packed) ....and explain how my website is the solution. They could pay a pretty cheap monthly fee... (not sure of what to charge.. $20 - 80 seems reasonable, obviously the more I can prove its worth it the more I can charge...so I may up the price as it grows) I could also charge more for more visible listings.

I could at first, (tell me if this is a good or bad idea) offer some of the higher-profile venues a free listing for 1 or two months, just so I can say they are on the website and also so that if they have a good experience they can be social proof for me when I pitch it to other venues.

My target market would be the huge amount of 20-somethings in my area. The website would be free to them, and I'd promote it heavily through my friends, Facebook, and local club promoters. They could sign up with their email or their phone for text alerts WEEKLY ...to keep them connected to the service and telling their friends. I even have the capability of making an App for the service, if it grows enough to warrant creating one. People my age frikkin love Apps.

Eventually I would want to expand to other coastal college cities...I think it has a lot of potential and I think the benefit to the clubs and venues DEFINITELY makes it worth their money.

Obstacles ...

Obviously I want to research if there is a big enough market to make this worth my while. I don't really know the best way to find this information...should I just call these clubs and ask the owners if this is something they would want? I can talk to all my circle of friends and get their opinion if they would use it, it's just a little harder to survey venue owners. I mean, is it unprofessional for me to just call and say "Hey I'm thinking of doing this, do you think you would have a use for it?" ...Obviously I see a huge need for it but their opinion is the one that counts, so before I put money and time into creating this service I want to know!

Also, I can create the basic website myself (though I may look into having it designed for me, not sure whether or not it's worth it...) but I DO NOT know SEO..... clearly my website needs to be easy to find for it to succeed. Should I take the time to learn SEO? From what I have learned it seems quite time consuming and like professionals are totally worth the $$. I mean I know how to use YouTube videos to increase my rankings but that's honestly my limit.

^^ This is what I need your pro advice on!

As far as taking action, hell I could get started with this FAST. I'm a personal trainer at a really upscale club a few mornings a week, and I work from home in the afternoons. So I can easily make the time to go face-to-face or email/call these venues. I've done promo modeling work so I do know the importance of getting face to face and showing huge enthusiasm, I feel like it's harder for people to say no in person. I used to do all the marketing for a local fitness business and I had to go from business to business making connections and setting up cross marketing, so I have NO fear of talking to people.

All right..... give it to me straight :)

Dear Cierra,

I looked for a source online for lists of social venues with cool events happening recently but couldn't find any. I'm in my 20s as well so this does indeed appeal.

There's a need for it, but my biggest question would be how can one best profit from it.

You need to create a lot of value to charge rewarding money for it. The best value you'll be providing with the site you have in mind would be information on where those events are. So I somehow feel that charging the customers instead of the club owners seems like a better idea. I could be dead wrong.

It's like: "Want to know where all the cool people are going to this weekend?"

You can get your access to the 'circle' for a monthly subscription of $____.

An app to go along with it would be cool. Someone just gone off work and felt boring so they'd like to go somewhere interesting that evening. So they just switch on their app and drive to the venue and have a good time.

This idea can actually give you a lot of power and authority if it takes on wings. To be someone who's extremely social. Not sure how to do it best but this' the idea I have in mind. To be the source that shows where the coolest and envied people - in this case especially hot and beautiful women, go to.

Advertising wise, I'd suggest focus most of your time on social media, word of mouth & etc.

If at first the customer base seems small, the idea is actually highly scalable so it can work. Increasing the scope of locations and distance from where you start will increase your profits.

Just do well to remember inviting me to your uppermost class VIP events assuming these suggestions did work one day.

Maybe there, but totally nothing in my area. It's so weird, I thought for sure there would be at least some sites like this. We badly need them, I hate those nights where everyone wants to party but no one knows where....so we all sit around going, "Idk what do YOU wanna do?"

I think there's a definite need for this. Granted, I am out of my 20's, and have always been an introvert, but during those magical 1-2 years when I actually enjoyed going out, :p finding new places to try was always a problem, especially when I moved to a new city.

Regarding SEO, I agree that it'll be important for it to get around, especially if you expand to cover other areas. But for now, I wonder if it would be worth it to connect with bloggers or news sites in your area, in addition meeting face to face with the owners of the clubs you want to feature. If you developed a system for doing this, I bet you could knock that out rather quickly.

In the meantime you could explore whether or not learning to do SEO yourself would be preferable to paying for it.

I could do that....I know people who are involved with club promotions too who could help a lot with word of mouth. Also maybe these clubs/bars could promote the website on their facebook page too, so they get more out of it. I could probably get the website up and running and looking great for +/ $100, and then I see it growing as I do the foot work and get businesses on board.

A lot of my experience when I was marketing the fitness business was that when I'd walk into businesses, the owner was almost never there. At the same time, email and phone calls seem to get passed over easily. So I figure I'll go place to place and have some kind of flyer/postcard I bring with me. Maybe even a flyer wrapped around a cheap rubber flip flop or something "Get more feet in your door" being the play on words I use for that. Or something of that nature. The flip flop would be purely to get attention and differentiate me from the tons of other flyers I'm sure they get. (learned something similar at a marketing seminar) Maybe not even a flip flop, just some kind of "wtf" physical object to attach to the flyer for attention. Maybe a cheap pair of underwear "Get more a$$...(es) in your door!" Stupid haha but I'll play with it. It's gonna take a lot of time and hard work, walking, talking. But I can do this stuff!

I can see Facebook ads being a really great way to get people using the site as well. Especially since you can target your demographic so narrowly.

Well, because my target market doesn't have much money to spend, I figured the best route for getting paying customers is having the businesses pay a monthly fee to be featured every week. "This Saturday @ 11, Club X is having DJ blah, and special guest LMFAO" and just have their events updated every week.

This would be of huge benefit to them. I can't tell you how many cool events and parties I've missed because I didn't hear about them until after...because you have to be following EVERYONES facebook business page to know what's going on.

It could be a pretty affordable monthly cost for the business too, costing more on a month to month basis vs. less for a year long membership.

I see the idea of charging users of the site, but like I said, my target market doesn't have a whole lot of spending money, whereas since the business has the potential to make MUCH more money from it, they should be ok with spending $50 a month (hell, if it gets them ONE customer its paying for itself!)

How would you all recommend testing to see if this is something businesses will go for?? I could always call and explain the concept to club owners to see if they would be interested, but is that unprofessional to do if I can't offer the service yet??

- I'm a n00b to doing my due diligence and am coming up with my own pay certainty tests right now, but I don't think it'd be unprofessional at all. I think success in this part of it would be you emphasizing that you are gathering information and garnering potential interest for a service that would benefit club owners, and not pushing a sale on them just yet. I've had some success by sending potential clients an email that attempts to ask without selling, kind of like this:
Hello, ___
My name is McNandez and I am [a fan of their business]. I would like to know if you have 5-10 minutes this week to answer a few questions about [my idea] that I am working on. I'm currently brainstorming ideas to do [idea] and wanted to get your opinion.
[something about how I found them, something complimentary about their business]
Do you have time for a quick phone call this week?

And so on. So far, I've gotten a response nearly every time, but YMMV with club owners.

I think it is a great idea. I always look todo something on the weekends but can't find shit; however there are lots of sites that promote events and stuff albeit kind of useless but they do....many of them. How you will be different from the rest of the "event" related websites?

As to who you must charge...it should be the businesses for sure. Whoever makes money will pay. Try to get at least one interested venue who'd pay you when you got your site up and running. Just find ONE paying customer before you spend a dime on it.

I'm actually on the same boat as you are, launched my site recently...after roughly a month of work....now looking for a paying customer. The best way to get your ball rolling is to talk to both sides....people who'd use your site to look for events to get a feel of this side, and also talk to a few venue owners to see if they would pay "if" such a services existed to get a feel of that side.

Recently I was in a marketing conference one of the guest speakers was saying he spoke to 500 business owner before working on his project to make sure he solved a real pain point.

Good luck man. Let us know how it goes. Very keen to know how your venture goes.

Thank you ALL for your input! I am definitely going to go ahead and approach some of these businesses to get a feel for it before I invest any money and time...and also talk to more of my friends about if they would use a service like this.

Another thought I had, (to encourage more people to use the site!) is to offer discounts exclusive to people who found the event through my website. 1/2 off a drink or cover charge for example.

Hmm good food for thought from you all. Thank you!

it has a lot of potential... the hardest part is getting all events organizers and venue to constantly post their updates on your site. you will need to actively pursue them for several months and only when you already have considerable traffic will you be able to count on them volunteering to give you events update.

there's a lot of possible ad opportunities there too.

the next thought is why not make it social network site that's focused on events?

Here's my two cents!

It's a great idea but think on scale.

Is your site going to be a clusterfuck of information from all the possible places to go?

Here's my idea and it could really make you some money so I expect a 51% stake in your business venture. :urock2:

Start your website, make it look awesome, then start calling places tell them what you're doing in the most promotional way possible. Then limit the people that can get in on it. Tell them you're only allowing 5 of the best places in the city to advertise. The cost is $80 a month for just a link or $150 a month for a full graphic with description and directions. Most places will bite because it's advertising cost and easy to write off on taxes. If they don't say I completely understand I'll be calling "their nearest competitor" next, so let me know if you change your mind.

Did I mention you need to make the website name specific like "chicagonightlife.com"

After you've filled up one website with advertisers take your formula and multiply it! Do it in city after city after city. Then all you have to do is maintain the website from your home and watch the money roll in through auto-pay.

PS: you might want to offer a special 3 month or 6 month contract to these places that they get a discount for paying up front.

Just an idea but I think it would be the best way for you to scale it to monster proportions.

cierra,

welcome to the forum, and good on you for taking a shot!

here is an example of what I think you are talking about? : Visit Brisbane | Your guide to things to see and do in Brisbane

Pretty similar concept. You can see some of the 'backend' data here : Visitbrisbane.com.au Site Info

whats interesting is the keywords that are being used to find this website. The data shows you a little bit about what the website is being used for.

IMHO: monthly subscription would not be good - better to be free access.

I doubt people really want to use it most months of the year - and I doubt that potential advertisers are going to like the prospects of you getting an audience if the users have to pay to access their ads. That means it would take a long time to build the audience, and that would slow you down getting advertisers on board.

However, the idea of getting people to pay to have their stuff promoted on their site is a good one. You could develop your site such that visitors could even make bookings through your site (kinda like wotif.com?).

Also you could offer products through affiliate programs. Say someone offers a ski-tour, or jet boat cruise, or whatever. Sell tickets and claim a clip!

Awesome! In response to the fact that many cities may have this already....I've looked a LOT and searching my city + nightlife just comes up with, yes, lots of sites that talk about some of the hottest clubs around here and things to do (mostly lame tourist guides though)

HOWEVER! Notttthinggg at all is current and updated weekly. If I was looking for something to do THAT weekend, I'd have to click over to every.single.club. website to see their current events.

VV Regarding this...yes, yes, yes, I like it! 3 or 6 month plans would be great for keeping at least a somewhat consistent pay coming in. And yeah making it something that people feel some "competition" to get featured on is a great idea! I see the layout being something similar to the local "daily deal" sites around here. Clear layout, featured picture of the business (for them its for the current deal, for me it would be the current event) and then a clear, easy to find page for businesses to go to, to be featured on. And then for people to use the site, it will be free, but the user needs to enter their email. Keeping them in contact with the site and growing its user base, so as I pitch the site to businesses, I can tell them they will be pushing their events to "X" amount of people weekly. (Also can use push notifications through an App I can easily make for the website, to notify people directly on their phone of "whats up this weekend)

And I FOR SURE plan to scale it to more than one city :)

I'm getting really excited. I'm trying to keep a calm clear outlook though :)

I have a lot of friends who do event promotions / modeling for the local clubs so I'm hitting them up on Facebook to figure out who they would recommend talking to...i.e. who hired you for promoting this club? What's their contact info, can you introduce us? I even know people involved in that scene all the way in Vegas...hmm so maybe that will be my next stop as this grows.

Also just signed up for a free webinar by Leela Cosgrove on using Facebook Ads to promote my business. My target site users will be on FB a LOT so if I can use that effectively it will be perfect!

Now, I'm writing out as clear and simple of a plan as I can just to get started. Let me ask, (I am SO non-techy) ...would you recommend using a wordpress blog with a great theme for my website? I have heard such great things about using wordpress and there are so many plugins that I feel would be useful to me. Hell I think there may even be an SEO plugin (again, I'm not techy so is this good?)

Would you recommend going with that or some other web service?

Thank you! Great advice, and yes I agree, I would keep it free for users. The businesses I would charge, because to THEM its worth it...they are going to make money off it!

As opposed to having to wait for people to search their website/FB page out each and every week to fill up events, with me they would be having their events pushed straight TO an email list (which I will do all that I can to grow as fast as possible, with qualified people of course)

Let's say I have 2,000 people on that email list. And let's say the average customer at the club spends approx $80 that night (getting in, drinks, all that) ...and I WILL be doing research to get more solid numbers so I can use this to pitch the site. But using these ones... if I was charging $100 a month to the business....if literally just 2 people from the email list/website came to the club that weekend, they already make a profit ($160 - $100, $60 profit...not huge, but just goes to show.) Now since I'm emailing and updating my site once a WEEK, they have a LOT of chances to lure people in and make a profit!

Benefits the users of the site would get (incentivizing them to sign up with their email for this site, instead of just looking up every single club)

*Convenience
* Speed
* Special discounts ONLY offered to people who found the event through the website.
* Can buy VIP Bottle service or tickets right there on the site.
* Love the idea of affiliate programs! I will feature sports/water oriented events too, since not everyone likes to get shit faced every weekend (shocking I know, but being pregnant I now see that there's just got to be other things to do) so selling tickets or packages would be a great idea.

I think at this point, to get you up and running/testing ASAP, a sharp Wordpress theme would be the way to go. You can always adjust as you grow, plus there's so much you can do with a WP page.

Here's my thoughts on how to monetize.

I don't think you should charge the users a monthly subscription I think the charges need to go to the businesses.

To provide the best experience and data to your users I think being listed on your site should be free for the businesses, they can list their events and various important information.

You should focus on building a huge email list requiring this of people viewing your site. You should then charge the businesses for access to this list. If you want to blast your event to our 100k targeted email list it is $X. Everyday or before everyweekend you could send out the email with the various sponsored events for the area.

Maybe you could offer some businesses a sponsored entry for free instead charging X% for a conversion. For instance the advertiser could email the list with an offer for a discount on entry or buy one get one something, for each of these units that is purchased you get x% of each sale.
