    Default Custom Furniture Business

My brother is making me some customer baby furniture (size, color and my Initial all customized), and has several people interested in buying one as well. I told him he could put a flier up in my store to try to get more customers...

His cost on the piece is about $200, and he would sell it for $400 to $450.

What's the potential in a business like this? How could he market it/expand?

I think it's quite hard to make fastlane

the margins are very, very, very high on furniture (it's like clothing), but there are so many players.

You could make decent money I'm sure, but it would take a big distribution network to make it huge (furniture is not very small and light)

I still like custom/designer furniture, but usually it's way too expensive for what you get.. I am currently having a concrete table built by different suppliers, it's like creating my own custom piece of furniture.

In order to get it into retailers, the price would skyrocket because of their markup, so I think that's out.

It would have to be Direct Sales. Expanding outside of his current geographic region would also be difficult based on high shipping costs.

So, I don't really see Fastlane potential either. But I do believe it could be a nice business that provides some good income for him.

At $250 profit/piece, he could sell 200 a year and make $50k. With 200 base customers, he could upsell new products and up it to $75k+. After that, I don't see a whole lot he could do to grow it...

It has been very helpful. I'm using all your infomation as I continue to formulate my next moves. Update: The stores I'm interested in are small stores that cater to the client that wants something different. Their inventory is always changing and is unique. They seem to have a good formula and I just want to be a part of it.
