W3Schools Online Web Tutorials is the best place you should go when it comes to this matter for both beginners and experts. But for beginners, focus only to the basic HTML tutorials and some CSS or you'll easily get lost.

You can also try out some free services first like webs.com, weebly, etc. then play around with the free templates from what you have learned from w3schools.

You can also check out 3stepstowebsitecreation.com for easy step-by-step guide on how to create a website.

    +1 on w3schools.
Best thing about them is that they are up to date e.g. html5. Other pages with tutorials are a lot slower on this matter.
