    Default Accounting software

has anyone seen or heard of this package? I'm currently doing research on accounting packages and this looks pretty polished but I'm not finding a whole lot of non-bias info on it.

Don't know anything about it, but the first thing I noticed is that all your data is stored server-side, meaning:

    1) You don't store your own data files (which may or may not mean you will have access to them);

    2) Someone else has access to your data.

Neither of those scenarios makes me perfectly comfortable (could they steal my data or hold it hostage?), especially for a company I've never heard of (and therefore I don't know if they will go away overnight and take my data with them).

The other thing to keep in mind is that most CPAs and Accountants these days have pretty good integration with the larger accounting packages (like Quickbooks), so your more likely to find a tax professional who works with one of the bigger names than with this company.

I have no experience with NOLApro, but quickbooks seems to be the standard for small business accounting. My previous employer used it to keep track of several projects at once without much trouble.

QuickBooks Pro is easy to use, CPAs are familiar with it, easy to save and back up. You can download info directly from bank accounts (biz accounts), create excellent P&L, balance sheets, and other special reports on the fly... very, very highly recommended.

I agree with JScott: I don't like internet based accounting software at all....

I've been looking at tinyerp.com lately due to the fact that it is open source and can be tweaked to my particular application. I'm in the process of buying a business that needs both front office and back office capabilities and most of the smaller accounting packages are strictly backoffice in my opinion.

According to what I have found on Nolapro its web based not internet based meaning anyone who has access to a basic Apache server, a MySQL database, and PHP 4 or better can keep it in shop on a server (A simple LAMP server would work). They do offer hosting but for freedom of use and securing company data I would rather host in house. Reason why I'm looking at this is mainly because Quickbooks doesn't run (nativly) on Linux.

Just took a look at tinyerp, pretty impressive. I guess I should probably state my thesis for reasoning in this research. I would like to compile all needed business applications needed for a company to run on a single platform environment other that Microsoft.

Web server/s, databases, CAD/CAM/CAE systems, accounting packages, office productivity, files servers, Audio/Video technologies, phone services, security, power management, email instant messaging, calendar/scheduling system, remote connectivity, backup systems, P2P file transfers, load balancing, ease of administration and replication front ends... for now this is my list.

The criteria for this acceptable business standard -

    1. industry supported
    2. well known (at least in IT circles)
    3. scalable (small - large scale business compatible)
    4. Single platform natively compatible and supported
    5. longevity
    6. flexible
    7. secure (generically simplistic meaning I know but Microsoft security is a joke IMO)
    8. stable (I don't deal with experimental software)
    9. Cost effective (whats the point if it ends up costing more after all the effort/sweat equity)
    10. customizable to any company

Currently I have low to high end proven solutions for all the above that are just as good if not better than MS solutions but accounting (even though I do like quick books). One of the reasons I've been looking into web-based accounting/manufacturing solutions is ease of use, platform interdependency, and non-area specific use (unfortunatly quick books online is IE dependent)

IT staff should not be to hard to fill as Linux/UNIX for any associate/BS degree is required to have some knowledge of those systems especially database administrators. On staff cost what would you rather pay 1 degree holding tech between 45K-60K a year + benefits or 2 general non-degree techs each pulling 30K-40K a year + benefits, the math is not hard. Non-Microsoft solution reasoning, licensing for numerous MS solutions is like paying for 1+ more IT staff with even more headaches. That and I would never run nor recommend running a MS web server or any mission critical services on Microsoft, Hence, a single non-MS platform of operation. I would like to point out this is building a company from the ground up not conversions as that presents a whole nightmare of issues.

I agree with you entirely and have done a lot of research over the years finding the right products to meet my needs presently and in the future. I've seen use case senarios with larger companies and MS licensing can be staggering and they normally lock business customers in to buying the next upgrade when it comes out.

Don't forget Smoothwall for your firewall and VPN needs.

Smoothwall looks good though a little lower end. I was thinking a little more renown like Cisco PIX and spam assassin, or Barracuda Networks, or Untangle gateway solution. The choices are out there. I am a huge fan of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) as long as I can get it supported which most business apps you can get support for with some kind of subscription. Untagle Gateway offers secured VPN though for ease and support I would go with the Pro package.

Reason for having so much backup support is 1. One even senior IT person cant know everything and 2. Neither I nor a company head would feel comfortable knowing, "if I lose this employee I'm screwed." Thanks for the input!

I'll have to take a look at Untagle Gateway.

Support is a huge factor and again FOSS normally has MS beaten hands down in quality and price.

    Heres the link for it

    http://www.untangle.com/

One thing you might notice about Untangle vs. Smoothwall, in comparison Untangle is a resource hog but that is due to module vertualization making it extremely easy to customize. depending on the size of business you have even more options. It is open source at its base and for most small range companies it should work just take a look at the commercial packages too. I've personally never tried open VPN but have looked into it and it gets a little deep to initially setup, after that its not to bad so I hear. The comercial pack offers a VPN package as well as the option to run dedicated hardware. Diebian based and trial/business tested (FOSS wins again ) so hardware support and stability are top notch if you go with the off the shelf computer method.

A little off topic but we seem to think along similar lines:

For the business I am buying I will need web, email, file, and app servers, all of which I have in my basement from a previous project. I would like to keep the servers here and use VPN for the office and eventual offices as I intend to move the business in a couple of years and I really prefer that employees don't have physical access to servers anyway. The web and email servers won't be hit hard as this business is an electrical contractor and future divisions will be similar in nature, the app server will most likely be running Tiny ERP which isn't a bandwidth hog. The file server will see mainly 1-4 page word documents, some pdfs, and pics. My question is this: My current bandwidth is 6M down 384k up with an option to go up to 12M down in bursts 2M up in bursts without spending real money for true commercial grade products. Am I going to run into a bottleneck with the web server and VPN for the other services?

I think you might run it some issues with the servers.

That is great advice. I always do background checks on hires.
there are some very nice points on there.
I think it comes down to what you want out of any profession.

I missed the last few posts on this, been mainly seeing the new threads. As far as a bandwidth issue, for the majority of what your doing what you have should be fine. My question would be how often do you file transfer photos/large files? How much growth do you see happening and do you ever intend there to be streaming video/video phone on there? If you see the photos taking a longer time or expanding your network/network use you may want to upgrade. Depending on the quantity of traffic and volume I would definitely suggest upgrading to the next step up (12M/2M) but that should last pretty good for your traffic even in a more congested network (20>35 PCs). The metric you have to weigh your bandwidth is not so much how fast it is at peak usage but peak usage + average file size over total use-load. Basically, the Upload is the main concern here. If you find yourself waiting more and more often then I would upgrade the connection the 324kb upload would be pretty slow even for a couple computers but the upgrade should more that fix that.

Since I last posted I've come to the conclusion that it might be better to place the servers in the office. It would run an additional $1200/yr total for the higher bandwidth on both ends and I've heard that Comcast is pretty good at sniffing out servers using DNS forwarding on their homeowner accounts. As far as volume I don't much like paper documents so there would be a fair amount of pdf files and once I get the primary business stabilized after the transition I plan to add a division that will be architectural drawing and photo heavy as it's pretty hard for customers to argue with a picture of a project that they previously approved.
