    Default Why Business Books… SUCK

OK this was an article i wrote for Inspyur and thought it would be good sharing it here. I will sum up the major points.

    - We love buying books to add on our wall shelf but hardly read them all cover-to-cover.

    - Most books exaggerate and are repetitive, something that could be said in 100 pages is 250 pages long.

    - Most books tell you of problems and give poor solutions. Knowing you need to do something is one thing but knowing how to do it is another thing. After reading many books you wouldn't know what to do

    - Most books go into MBA style courses and are suited towards executives at large companies not start ups.

    - Reading irrelevant stuff adds to INFORMATION OVERLOAD.

In conclusion, not all books suck but majority do and people just don't know what to read. You should only read books in the areas which you will be working on.

you can read the article here.

I like business books and I have learned more from them than the 120k my parents have spent on my college. Some may suck. But some stick with you in a profound way. MJs book and RDPD changed my outlook on life.

Other books help you with things: email marketing, social media, sales, copywriting, customer relationship, managament... Specific topics that will help you.

Im curious what credentials do you have that allows you to throw out statements like that?

The point is do you really need all that information when you will not be using it while starting a business as it can lead to information overload.

The best thing about business book is that I get to pick exactly what I learn. Information overload is something I would associate with higher education. Learning totally pointless things with some halfway useful nuggets of info here and there.

The answer to that problem is to read what you need when you need it and no sooner.

In a lot of ways, that is how I approach things ... on a problem-by-problem basis. Read the books that solve each specific problem you are dealing with NOW ... when you solve 100+ problems, you string together a process the makes you skilled in a particular area.

When people try to learn a new skill, they try to learn it in all one shot ... if you're trying to learn how to play the piano, it's best you start with Chopsticks, not Mozart.

    man screw business books.

The only books I've found useful so far have been MJ's, Steve Job's Bio, and Think and Grow Rich.

But yea, Like MJ says its good to go by things as you need to learn them. I tend to get things done much faster when I do it like that. instead of saying "Shit now I have to learn everything there is to know about javascript" I just start with a button here, a function there, and within a week I've got an entire little program and my own library of functions. And then BOOM. I learn about Jquery. haha

This conversation comes up every couple of weeks.

It took me around 600 some books (up to a little over 1,000 at this point) to change my philosophy
from the broke, depressed, sick kid to the successful confident man I am today.

I didn't skim books, I memorized them. My thought process was that if I could BECOME the
people that wrote these books - learn their way of thinking, way of taking action, ways of
business, ways of behaving - then I could become successful as well.

Maybe I'm special because I have the discipline and desire to improve myself so I read each
book several times, took notes, listened to the audio program over and over and over.

    To each their own though.

The books will be most useful to the mind that is built to receive and implement the information. Some don't need books to be successful, others do. To each their own.

I read EVERYTHING. You need to take what you can out of them and learn from it. I learned in school, I learned in life, I have traveled a lot and even gone to school in other countries(I learned more outside the classroom than in it then), and I learn from reading. EXPERIENCE is probably the best way to learn but reading definitely helps a lot.

I don't think that any kind of reading is ever a waste of time... I'd be willing to bet that every successful person would say that education (or learning, in whatever form it might take) was a big factor in their success. MJ says it in his book, too. If you don't have the discipline to read a 200-300 page book to glean whatever new information it might have, do you have what it takes to build and design a successful business system?

Exactly. Cross the bridge when you get to it, otherwise books might even derail you from your track.

Saying that, I am a veracious reader of business books. Most suck, some are gold. The authors I think are legit:

DeMarco, Ries, Sinek, Browne, Pink, Winget

Well as for the OPs statement you rarely read them cover to cover.

I have read most of these cover to cover and many I have read certain parts multiple times.

If anyone would like any of these for free please let me know.

Thats a very sweeping statement to make.....

Most people dont really know how to PROPERLY read a book.

Grab "How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading" by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Lincoln Van Doren

    Money well spent.
Author of "The Few That Do",
    The Definititve Goal Setting Guide,
    Available worldwide on Amazon.

Yes, check out Josh Kaufman and The Personal MBA. He keeps a list of the 99 best business books and so far he has been pretty spot on.
I think he posts here once in a while also. The 99 Best Business Books - Recommended Reading List

I agree most business books are a waste but there is some gold out there.
